RIHANNA may be hooking up with rapper Drake in Paris, but when she attempts to remove herself from behind the cool comfort of a hotel penthouse suite, what is waiting for her?

Nothing but a swarm of paparazzi, a mega security detail and a buzz of fans who frantically follow and capture her every move, that’s what.

Everyone has a camera, so everyone has become a pap — usually bad ones at that — but a few minutes of social media infamy between pals is making some stars even more wary, frustrated and determined to shake off their celebrity status.

It’s hard to feel too sorry for A-listers, with big bucks and big fame.

But for every celebrity who handles their status with grace, style and alomb, there are those who just. Can’t. Handle. It.

No real privacy, sycophantic friends, no ‘me’ days, a constant watch over every move you make and easy access to ‘yes’ men who can furnish you with anything from drugs to hookers are just a few of the things that would make most sane people choose to shun the celebrity spotlight.

While some people relish being recognised 24/7, where does the unreal life end and the real life begin?

Just this week actor Alec Baldwin decided to ‘retire’ from public life. He’s already threatened to quite Twitter. Three times.

The bad boy drew up a 5000-word, seven-page thesis for the entertainment media, ironically to be published in the medium he detests.

In this week’s New York Magazine, under the headline “I Give Up”, the actor bids adieu to “public life” citing reporters and photographers covering his outbursts and violent confrontations over the years as ruining his “dreams of running for office at some point in the next five years.”

Apparently he is mad at gay people too for calling him out on his gay-bashing statements that he either denies or forgets he made and at fellow New Yorkers for not recognising his amazing talent.

It will be interesting to see whether he sticks with his resolve. Things may change if and when he has a new project to plug.

Closer to home, the Lara Bingle and Sam Worthington ‘pap’ incident in New York and Grant Hackett’s admission to rehab both have me questioning whether the price of fame is worth it.

The recent suicide of TV personality Charlotte Dawson — a woman who, like Alec Baldwin, decided to retire from the rigours of ‘celebrity’ life just last year — has really hit home for many people.

To cope with the trappings of ‘fame’- and they are trappings – takes a very strong person and a strong support team to whip you into shape if your ego starts to get too swollen.

A recent video of Rihanna in Paris shows a swarm of excitable fans nearly crushed her as she makes her way into her hotel. You call that a glamorous life?

Not only was Rihanna shocked, but fans were battered to the ground as they scrambled in an attempt to get to her.

Mass hysteria is nothing new — Beatlemania, Michael Jackson and One Direction know a thing or two about it — but these chaotic scenes are becoming more frequent and scary.

The fame monster is an insatiable one and to some, an addictive one. Some celebs just cant cope with or without it.

The popularity of stars — and often their next pay cheque — is often dependant on their popularity, but the crap many of them go through to be popular makes you wonder if life in that kind of spotlight is really worth it.

The Bingle and Worthington incident in New York; the Hackett incident in Melbourne and news that Grant Denyer has an alleged ice addiction has seriously made me question why anyone would want to be a celebrity these days. What about you?
