Devo guitarist Bob Casale has died aged 61.

Casale, who was known as “Bob 2” in New Wave group, died suddenly of heart failure on February 17th. He is survived by his wife Lisa and a son and daughter.

Casales played in the iconic band with brother Gerald, and brothers Bob and Mark Mothersbaugh.

“As an original member of Devo, Bob Casale was there in the trenches with me from the beginning,” said Gerald in a statement on Facebook.

“He was my level-headed brother, a solid performer and talented audio engineer, always giving more than he got….His sudden death from conditions that lead to heart failure came as a total shock to us all.”

Devo, best known for their hit Whip It, were formed in Akron, Ohio in 1973 after members witnessed the Kent State massacre of anti-war students in 1970.

The band broke up in 1991 and then reformed in 1996 and toured frequently afterwards. Their 2010 album Something for Everybody, was their first in 20 years.
