Which singer’s just come out?
IN the week that his debut album sees its worldwide release, 22-year-old British singer Sam Smith has taken the bold step of confirming publicly for the first time that he is gay.
The singer, whose Australian hits include Stay With Me, La La La and Money On My Mind, made the admission in the latest issue of
Fader
magazine.
Sam Smith: ‘Male Adele’ feels the emotional strain
Smith’s much-hyped debut album In the Lonely Hour was released this week, and it’s a lovelorn collection of modern soul with song titles like Leave Your Lover and I’ve Told You Now. Smith had previously said much of his music dealt with an unrequited love, but it’s only this week that he confirmed what many had suspected: that love was a man.
“In the Lonely Hour is about a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn’t love me back. I think I’m over it now, but I was in a very dark place,” he told
Fader.
Smith said that the unnamed gentleman was aware he’d inadvertently inspired an album that’s set to top the UK charts this week.
“I told him about it recently, and obviously it was never going to go the way I wanted it to go, because he doesn’t love me. But it was good as a form of closure, to get it off my chest and tell him. I feel better for it. I feel almost like I signed off this part of my life where I keep giving myself to guys who are never going to love me back.”
“It’s all there now, and I can move on and hopefully find a guy who can love me the way I love him.”
Smith blurs the lines in the video for his upcoming single Leave Your Lover, in which he’s seen with both a male and female love interest. Check it out:
