AMERICAN rock band Aerosmith have announced their first Australian tour in 24 years.

Aerosmith will play Rod Laver Arena on May 4, with tickets on sale March 4.

Aerosmith will play ANZ Stadium on April 28 with Wolfmother, Grinspoon, Spiderbait and the Dead Daisies. Tickets go on sale March 4.

Aerosmith will play Brisbane Entertainment Centre on May 1, tickets go on sale on March 4.

Frontman Steven Tyler said his role as a judge on American Idol in 2011 and 2012 had given the band a new audience.

"There were 40 million people watching Idol every night. People would come on and sing Aerosmith songs. It brings you back up again," Tyler said.

"It re-upped the Aerosmith catalogue by 300 per cent. It did its job.

"I can’t go anywhere now but it’s all good."

Tyler and bandmate Joe Perry have feuded since Aerosmith formed in 1970.

Perry tried to replace Tyler with another singer after he found out about the Idol job by reading about it online.

Tyler eventually made peace with his bandmates to record last year’s "Music From Another Dimension", their first album since 2004.

"I’d got myself sober three years ago and thought what am I doing this for?," Tyler said.

"I told the band ‘I’m on fire, I’m ready to do this with you or without you’. I was the first one to come to the table and say we’re really not worth anything unless we’re together. Let’s put the grievances aside."

"I’m still amazed by this band. Two years ago we were fighting, I didn’t want to know about them anymore. I got a chance to think about it for a month, really strongly.

"Aerosmith is the biggest accomplishment in my life short of my kids. The damage we’ve done in this band writing songs from "Dream On" to "Walk this Way" to "Another Last Goodbye", it’s been an incredible journey."

Tyler, who turns 65 next month, has plans to explore the outback when he hits Australia.

"Last time I went I wanted to see a kangaroo, hold a koala and dive the Great Barrier Reef, and I got to do them all.

"This time I want to walk the Songlines hopefully with an Aboriginal chief. I’ve read about the Songlines, it’s incredible stuff. These are the people who know everything. I’m in a rock band, I don’t know shit."
