AFTER an intensive exploration of Sydney’s nightlife, Justin Bieber returned to his regular gig as a concert performer with his first Allphones Arena concert last night.

The most famous, and more recently infamous, 19-year-old on the planet only ran about 40 minutes late for the curtain call for his opening Sydney show.

Fans, or theirs parents, had complained about Bieber starting his second Brisbane concert shortly before 10pm earlier this week.

With his sunglasses firmly in place, Bieber swaggered down the runway, striking static poses to whip the 14,000 fans into a collective scream which would damage hearing even with custom made earplugs.

While energetic with his choreography from the start, his singing didn’t always sound entirely live and the vocal strength he displayed on his first tour was sacrificed for rudimentary bells and whistles.

Yet you could hear the breaths and other telltales of live singing when he performed the ballads including Love Me Like You Do, the electro pop of She Don’t Like The Lights and the acoustic numbers.

The pop concert convention of video packages to buy costume change time weren’t up to the Hollywood standard of Beyonce but for his true Believers, a montage is enough as long as he is its subject.

With a live band driving energy into the concert and Bieber busting all the moves you would expect from the heir aspirant to Justin Timberlake’s crown, this had all the ingredients of a world class concert.

Yet the partying may have taken its toll. This opening night felt like Bieber by the numbers rather than engaged and electric performance.

Of course, the kids are alright with all of this; they are invested in every scream worthy moment even if it feels 2D with basic pyro effects and choreography.

It’s just their seen-it-all aunt who wished Bieber had been so much more.

He performs again tonight at Allphones Arena.
