Stats: Did Gaga BUY Dope’s #8 position on Hot 100?

Lady Gaga’s song “Dope” from her new album ARTPOP recently debuted at #8 on the Hot 100, much higher than most would have expected.

How did she do it? It was noticed that the video of her performance of Dope at the YTMA was the main contributing factor behind the amount of digital sales. The video gained over 8 million views in one week, about 2 million less than her music video Applause did in its first week.

This shocked me so I did some investigating. I noticed on YouTube that week that the Dope video was playing in FULL as an advertisement before some videos. I wasn’t sure if these counted towards views, so I did some investigating. They count as long as the video is watched the entire way through! This coming from Billboard themselves!

So did Gaga pay for this advertisement? Or did YouTube choose to advertise it themselves since it was THEIR award show? And how many of the total views that week came from the views of the advertisement? I think it safe to say that a lot did. If you look at the viewing statistics on YouTube, they plummeted after the advertisement for it went away.

I’m hoping this doesn’t become a “thing.”
