A DISTURBING trend has been spreading online in the wake of news that One Direction member, Zayn Milak has left the band.

1D fans are known for their intense dedication to the band but a shocking reaction has led to some fans reportedly engaging in self harm. The act has even caused the hashtag #CutForZayn to trend on Twitter.

Some believe it started as a joke but as upsetting photos began to circulate on social media, it quickly became apparent that it was far from a joke.

The development has concerned the UK branch of mental health service, Mind. A spokesman for the charity stressed the need “to recognise the huge danger created by any site or social media trend that promotes self-harm.”

The band posted a statement to their Facebook page confirming Zayn’s departure yesterday morning with the 22-year-old saying, “I’d like to apologise to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart.”

If you are distressed you can contact the Mind Australia carer helpline on 1300 550 265.
