POP star Sam Smith will be the British male solo artist to sing a James Bond theme in 50 years.

Smith has been tapped to write and record Writing’s On The Wall for SPECTRE which will be released on September 25.

The Stay With Me chart-topper co-wrote the new Bond song with Jimmy Napes, who he worked with on his debut album In The Lonely Hour.

The big Bond score comes as Smith returns to live performance after battling throat problems earlier in the year which lead to the cancellation of his Australian tour.

“This is one of the highlights of my career,” Smith said in a statement.

“I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.”

Tom Jones was the last male solo artist to record a Bond title song for Thunderball back in 1965. The Live and Let Die theme was credited to Paul McCartney and Wings and co-written with wife Linda.

Bond producers have already proclaimed Writing’s On The Wall to be “one of the greatest Bond songs of all time”.

The same was said of Adele’s title track masterpiece for Skyfall which not only won the Oscar and Golden Globe awards for Best Original Song but sold more than five millions copies worldwide.

SPECTRE will be released in Australia on November 12 November after its UK premiere on October 26.

Smith will probably add the song to his set list when he returns to Australia for shows in December.
