HE MAY be one of the biggest performers in the world right now, but Sam Smith didn’t always have it easy.

He’s admitted he was the victim of homophobic abuse while growing up.

The 22-year-old singer, who came out when he was 11, told The Sun: “When I moved to London I got punched in the neck walking back from work. It was definitely homophobic.

“I was on the phone speaking quite loudly and had pink earphones on so it was pretty clear I was gay.”

He says that while he was accepted by his friends and family, he copped abuse at school.

“A bunch of boys from a rival school would shout insults at me as I walked from my home to the train station,” he said.

“I remember walking to the station getting ‘f*****’ shouted at me all the time.”

He says that despite tolerance growing there is still a real problem with homophobia.
