Rihanna: ‘They will screw you every time’

IT TAKES a lot to shock Rihanna, but when photos surfaced recently of a young superfan who had turned herself into a walking shrine by covering her body in the image of her idol’s face, even the R&B princess thought the gesture was a little extreme.
“You know what? I met her a while ago and she asked me to sign her arm. I signed it and then the next day I saw her again and she’d had it tatted. That was years ago and I hadn’t seen her much since then. But fast forward to now, that’s the update,” Rihanna laughs, shrugging her shoulders. “So, I guess she just never stopped.”

The 27-year-old pop icon has over 22 tattoos and seems bemused by her fan’s behaviour, which could be considered a little creepy. “Well, I mean, I wouldn’t do it. But it’s not me.”
Always in the news, Rihanna made history last week as the new face of Dior, with the Barbadian beauty the luxe brand’s first black spokeswoman. “I feel very special, not just as a woman of colour, which I think is brilliant, but as a woman to be acknowledged by Dior is very special.”
Rihanna is the latest face of Dior, making her the first-ever black ambassador of the luxury designer brand.

It seems of late, Rihanna has also been acknowledged by a certain Leonardo DiCaprio, however, she negates rumours that the two A-listers are romantically involved. “Stay off the blogs, they will screw you every time,” she warns.
Although there are no plans to settle down anytime soon, she has said she’d like to be ‘a wife’ one day. Who would make for the perfect husband? She considers, “Someone who could tolerate my schedule; someone man enough to do that and not get scared because I don’t have a lot of time to offer.”
When she does have spare time, she prefers to keep it low key. “At home I’m pretty boring. I just lay on the couch and watch TV,” she says, although with whom the Barbadian singer is sharing the couch with remains unconfirmed.
She’s come a long way since her abusive relationship with rapper Chris Brown, who was charged in 2009 with assault after a leaked photograph from the LAPD surfaced to reveal Rihanna’s injuries.
The couple reunited briefly in 2012, and in between she dated LA Dodgers baseball star Matt Kemp from 2009 to 2010. Most recently she was in a relationship with rapper Drake, who sounds a tad bitter over her alleged romance with DiCaprio and noted on the Times Live page, “It won’t last because she likes her men more ripped.”

It seems Rihanna has learned from her life experiences. “The more we respect ourselves the more men will respect us,” she says. “I have both sides to me and I think most women do. We are strong but they are very vulnerable as well.
“For me, I get very fierce and passionate about my career and about my family. But there are also things that make me become a little girl. Like, I love balloons, that definitely really brings out the little girl in me.”
In Manhattan to promote the animated family movie Home, Rihanna voices the lead character, Tip, who forms an unlikely friendship with an alien, performed by The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons.
She says of her alter ego, “I adored her personality. She’s very brave, fearless and very determined but what I really love about her is that she’s so sassy. I feel like I identify with a lot of those traits,” she smiles. “Especially the sass.”
She also enjoyed the movie’s positive message for young girls. “I think women are way stronger than they know, or sometimes they do know but they don’t always feel like being strong. Sometimes, you’re like, ‘Can I get a pass?’” she laughs.
“And also, Tip is so bold. And the way she dresses and how she wears her hair is not perfect and I feel like little girls should feel comfortable being that way, being strong and being themselves.”

As one of the world’s most iconic beauties, this afternoon Rihanna is dressed conservatively by her standards in a quilted white suit and white patent heels. Her hair is long and though she may look effortlessly glamorous, she is quick to point out, “This is my makeup artist. I can’t take any credit for it.”
Her image has taken some sharp turns since we first came to know her in 2005 when she released her debut solo album, Music of the Sun.
“I feel like my image evolves as I evolve as a woman. With growth, there’s change. My style is a reflection of my mood, my attitude wherever I am at, and you can see how it’s evolved since the beginning of my career just from my videos,” she says. “And style is a huge part of that attitude.”
Speaking of style, for all her figure-hugging and barely-there outfits she’s become known for, Rihanna says she’s not on any strict regimen in order to wear these much-photographed outfits. “I’m getting better with my training now that it’s album time and video time, so it’s time to get fit, get tight.”
Far from her counterparts who exist on kale and go to measures of extreme dieting, she assures, “I eat tonnes of mac and cheese, I really do. I hate vegetables but I’m learning to incorporate them, one by one into my diet.”

Her upcoming eighth studio album is due for release this year (possibly titled R8) with the first single already out, FourFiveSeconds which features a collaboration with Kanye West and Paul McCartney.
There’s no denying that Rihanna is at the top of her game, though she seems reluctant to see it that way. “What is the top? If you ever feel that you’re on top, you only have down to go,” she says. “And I don’t ever want to feel comfortable enough to say that.”
