THEY say good things come to those who wait — and The Rolling Stones rewarded the sold out crowd at Perth Arena very handsomely last night.

Kicking things off with epic opener Start Me Up, Mick Jagger and bandmates Ronnie Wood, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts delivered more than two hours of energetic hits in the first of two WA dates in the rescheduled Australian leg of their 14 on Fire Tour.

Emerging like something of a stylish Energizer Bunny in tight black jeans and a purple jacket with golden angel wings embellished on the collar, 71-year-old frontman Jagger stayed true to his lyrics — once he started, he never stopped.

Shimmying, shaking and strutting his way across the stage, which featured a tongue-shaped catwalk, he performed with all the intensity and stamina you’d have expected from him back in the ‘60s.

“Hello, Perth — how are you doing?” Jagger bellowed into the microphone.

“Thank you so much for your patience in waiting for us so long. We really appreciate it.”

Get Off My Cloud, Tumbling Dice and ballad Worried About You, during which Jagger jumped on the keys, were all early inclusions in a hit-filled set, which had the crowd hypnotised.

The sense that Perth fans felt they were in the presence of greatness was palpable and there was an unparalleled ecstatic energy in the air.

There simply wasn’t a hint of wear and tear from the band, with the Stones all visibly loving every moment — reacting to the cheers and grooving to the music like it was the first time for them, not as though they had done it countless times over 50 years.

Doom and Gloom, B***h, which won the fan vote for Perth, Honky Tonk Women and It’s Only Rock and Roll (But I Like It), were all devoured by the enthusiastic audience before Jagger officially introduced the fantastic backing band and singers, plus Wood, Richards and Watts.

Richards took over lead vocals for You Got The Silver and Can’t Be Seen before Jagger joined them back on stage for Midnight Rambler with Mick Taylor, who was a member of The Rolling Stones from 1969-1974.

“It’s good to be here — Well, it’s good to be anywhere,” Richards joked.

Miss You, Gimme Shelter, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Sympathy for the Devil and Brown Sugar capped off an incredible performance and left the crowd begging for more.

An encore of You Can’t Always Get What You Want, which featured an on-stage choir, and (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction was a fitting finale for the band’s first performance in WA in almost 20 years.

It’s the energy of the music, the sheer magnitude of their stage presence, their unwavering energy, commitment to the crowd and devotion to delivering a top notch performance each and every time that makes The Rolling Stones the best at what they do.

The Stones postponed the Australian leg of their tour in March after the death Jagger’s long-term girlfriend, fashion designer L’Wren Scott.

The band perform at Perth Arena again on Saturday night with tickets through Ticketek before dates in Melbourne, Hanging Rock in Macedon, Sydney, the Hunter Valley, Brisbane and Auckland.
