MELBOURNE rocker and it-girl Courtney Barnett has responded to US reviews describing her as the new Bob Dylan.

Salon Magazine writer Mack Hayden said of Barnett, a Northcote-based singer-songwriter and former pizza delivery girl: “I have found the new Bob Dylan, and she’s Australian. She is the voice of our anxious 21st century.”

Barnett has received rave reviews worldwide for her new album, Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit.

Most have tipped her as the Next Big Thing in rock.

Last month, she sang her northern suburbs-themed song, Depreston, on The Ellen DeGeneres Show after the US star named Barnett as her favourite new artist.

Barnett said she appreciated the adulation, but added: “I try not to take it to heart too much, the positive or the negative.

“I don’t think I’m a genius or super intelligent, as I seem to get labelled. It can be a bit over the top.”

Of the Dylan comparison, she said: “It’s not like I can take offence to that because what a lovely thing to say to someone.”

Barnett is home to play shows at the Forum Theatre on May 14, 15 and 16.

“It’s the end of the tour, so it will be emotional,” she said.

“There might even be tears on stage.”
