CAMERON Adams reviews Non-Fiction by Ne-Yo:

Ne-Yo wants to be R Kelly on this record, at least musically.

On Story Time Ne-Yo tries to convince his special lady friend to welcome a third party — and it’s not for dinner.

She says just because she finds another girl sexy it doesn’t mean she’s “bi”. Ne-Yo insists it does. He tells her she should open her mind. Then the mystery lady pipes up “What if I said I want to bring in another guy?” Ne-Yo states she’s lost her mind and notes “for real no dudes in this threesome”.

Yes, this is an odd album. It’s been a while between hits for Ne-Yo. Here he tries to marry being club and in the bedroom.

The Pitbull teaming Time Of Our Lives is the obligatory party banger. David Guetta’s on Who’s Taking You Home, but it’s surprisingly melodic.

Stargate’s Coming With You is an acid house throwback, She Knows is a rewrite of Katy Perry’s Dark Horse, rapper Juicy J even guests on it too.

But then Integrity is more like a Marvin Gaye throwback, as Ne-Yo meets a girl called Integrity. Yes, really. His harmonies are stellar though.

Money Can’t Buy samples ’70s soul jam Be Thankful For What You Got with style.

Good Morning is a baby-maker, but at least Ne-Yo is offering breakfast in bed to “start your day properly”. Ne-Yo knows nutrition is important.

Religious sees Ne-Yo thank the Lord for his lady’s body.

One More is the musical equivalent of a chick flick as Ne-Yo sings “You’re a little stressed and I bet your feet hurt”. The down-with-the-ladies vibe is ruined somewhat by TI then rapping about his junk.

The Weeknd has been blitzing the modern/retro soul thing of late, but Ne-Yo is back to regain his familiar territory.
