IS THIS the end of Jennifer Lopez’s music career?

The multidisciplinary diva, who has sold more than 40 million albums in the 15 years since her first musical release, is on track to deliver one of the most spectacular flops of 2014 with her new set AKA, released this week.

Based on early sales figures, AKA
looks set to shift around 25,000 copies in the US this week. To put that into perspective, that’s less than half the amount Mariah Carey sold last month in what were the worst opening week sales of her career.

It’s also around one-tenth as many copies Lopez’s most successful album, 2001’s J.Lo, sold in its first week.

The numbers across the pond are even worse: over in the UK, one of her biggest fanbases, AKA has so far sold just 736 copies, and looks unlikely to scrape into the top 40.

It’s a sudden fall from grace for an artist who, just three years ago, was enjoying the biggest hit of her career — the Pitbull-assisted worldwide number one
On The Floor.

What makes it all the more surprising is that Lopez is everywhere: she last week performed at the World Cup opening ceremony in front of audiences across the world, her judging stint on American Idol sees her beamed into American living rooms several times a week, and her rollercoaster of a love life regularly makes news.

With all this going on, have J Lo’s fans simply forgotten she still releases music?
