THEY say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

So Perth musician Jonathan Baucke decided impersonating his girlfriend’s favourite singer Josh Pyke and dropping a wedding proposal in the middle of a song might work.

Baucke went to extraordinary lengths to impress his future wife Kate Sputore.

Pyke is known for his wordy tunes so the aspiring groom had plenty of lines to fill in his rip off.

He used a melody and structure similar to Pyke’s popular Lines On Palms.

Then Baucke completed the donned Pyke’s usual stage clobber, a wig and dodgy front teeth and filmed a video which mimicked the award-winning singer songwriter’s clips.

“I know you’ve got the hots for Josh Pyke, you’ve taken me along to more than a few of his gigs,” is the opening line of Song For Kate.

He points out that her infatuation with the Sydney musician is pointless as he is already married with a couple of kids.

Baucke also couldn’t resist having a crack at the object of his girlfriend’s affections, mentioning in the song that a friend Gabrielle met him and he “came across to her as a bit of a c …”

The thrust of his proposal pitch is that he is a worthy second prize.

“Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad, instead of having him you could have me instead

maybe it would be OK if you woke up in the morning next to me each day

maybe it wouldn’t be so tough cuz you’d still have his music when you’d had enough of mine

it’s not something you’d regret cuz til he writes a song for you I’m probably going to be your best bet.”

The good news is that Kate said yes.

“I tricked her into it — by pretending to be Josh Pyke whom she seems to have a bit of a thing for. She fell for it! Now if only she’ll stop making me wear this stupid wig to bed every night,” he wrote to family and friends.

Pyke also posted the video proposal, which was uploaded about a month ago, to his Facebook page proclaiming the impersonation of his looks, songs and video concepts to be “solid gold!”

“This is probably the best thing I’ve ever seen. The attention to detail is amazing, down to the guitar chords and the broken teeth,” Pyke said yesterday.

“I’ve never met anyone called Gabby, but I can be a bit of a c … I wish them a long and happy life together!”

Pyke heads back on tour next weekend with good mates Chris Cheney, Tim Rogers and Phil Jamieson for their White Album concerts.
