LORDE is just Lorde.

The young woman who has swept the world’s airwaves and charts with the tide of her talent confirmed her singular specialness at her opening Sydney concert at the Hordern Pavilion last night.

While Ella Yelich O’Connor’s return to our stages was unsurprisingly postponed by ill health wrought by touring and the unexpected demands of success, the teenage hip pop artist presented herself as a performer who very much wanted to renew her acquaintance with Australian fans last night.

She opened with Glory and Gone, drawing attention and applause with her black and white persona and a backdrop equally as solo and stark.

Then the ubiquitous black curtains dropped to reveal her band of two, a drummer and keyboardist.

But it is all about Lorde, the notes and the words, her famous mane and full body slam punctuating every musical moment.

Lorde feels the music as viscerally in her body as she does in her vocal cords even when that pure voice could probably carry it all if she was just sitting on a stool under a naked light bulb.

While it is a predictable, and a well worked set for a debut artist, Lorde really does make you feel like she is not going through the motions even as the wildly disparate crowd deliver Pavlovian swelling cheers at all the right moments.

And how she manages this is so simple and so perfect, really.

She imbues “thank you” with the same generosity of spirit as her performance.

Lorde means it when she says “thank you”.

The fans lapped up every one of their favourites from Tennis Court to Team but Royals is the winner as much for its pop brilliance as for the display of crowns video backdrop which conjured Games Of Thrones so much more than it did the House Of Wndsor.

Lorde performs at the Hordern Pavilion again tonight.
