Johansson fronts new girl band
SCARLETT Johansson has assembled her own girl band with the aim of writing “super-pop” music.
The actress, who previously put out an album of Tom Waits covers and contributed to a Serge Gainsboug tribute album, will front the new group, which also features Holly Miranda, Kendra Morris, Julia Haltigan and Este Haim.
They call themselves the Singles.
“The idea was to write super-pop dance music written and performed by girls,” Johansson told Rolling Stone, listing Grimes, the Bangles and the Go-Go’s as influences. “I wanted it to be like those bands: ultra-pop but also a little ironic, a little in on the joke.”
The band’s first single, produced by TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek, is a synth-heavy track named Candy (listen to it here).
Candy is due out as a 12-inch single via Sitek’s own Federal Prism label. It’s available for pre-order now.
