JOEL Madden has opened up about brotherly brawls, nudity and making the move to Australia.

The 35-year-old rocker, who recently released a new album Greetings from California with his twin Benji under the name The Madden Brothers, was kind enough to answer nine completely random questions for news.com.au.

What’s the best song you’ve ever written?

“It would probably be a song called Brother which is on the new record, Greetings from California,” said Madden.
“It tells our story and we’ve always kind of written about this father/son relationship that we’ve had in our lives and it just tells the story a little bit more carefully, a little bit more eloquently than we’ve ever been able to and I think we’ve never been able to write a song like that until now.

“I also wrote a birthday song that I wrote for my kids on their birthdays. That’s a pretty epic song but I don’t know if I’m ever going to record it. I’m not telling you any lyrics, it’s a family secret.”

Have you ever tricked people into thinking you were your brother Benji?

“I wouldn’t say I’ve tricked them but I’ve let them think it because they didn’t know that I wasn’t him and it got too far into the conversation for me to interrupt them and tell them that I wasn’t Benji, so I just went along with it,” said Madden.

“It ended up becoming a long drawn out thing where I had to be Benji for longer than I thought I would and it all stemmed from me not wanting them to feel embarrassed. It can get a little awkward but ultimately it’s all coming from a loving place.”

Have you and Benji ever come to blows?

“Once in our life,” said Madden.

“It was back in our 20s and it was on tour and I really don’t remember what it was about. We swore we’d never do it again and we never have.”

What’s Benji’s worst habit?

“He’s always late,” said Madden.

When did you last see Benji naked?

“I never have actually,” said Madden. “Maybe when we were babies.”

What’s the wildest night you’ve had with Lionel Richie?

“We went out on his tour when he was in Sydney and we stayed out ALL NIGHT LONG.”

Who is the coolest celebrity you’ve met?

“That’s a tough one,” said Madden.

“I’d have to say Russell Crowe. He’s the coolest. We went to an NRL game and we saw the Rabbitohs play together and that’s the night I became a Rabbitohs fan. He took the time to sit with me and explain the whole game to me. He was very cool.”

Are you planning to move to Australia full-time?

“I love my life in Australia and I love being in Sydney but I also love my life in LA and New York,” said Madden.

“The big thing for me is if Australia is ever going to give me a passport THEN we can talk. I have to be fully accepted before I commit like that.”

The Madden Brothers are back in the country for the Toyota ‘Oh what a feeling!’ live event which was held in Melbourne yesterday to kickstart the lead up to the Toyota AFL grand final.

And FYI — Joel thinks the Sydney Swans will win.
