JESSICA Mauboy exiled the entourage and farewelled her boyfriend and family to forge a new musical direction in London this year.

She is following the lead of her idol Beyonce with the surprise drop of new single This Ain’t Love, the first taste of her take on the Rudimental and Disclosure sound which has commanded the global charts for the past two years.

Nine years after she emerged as our next teen pop star via Australian Idol, Mauboy told her team it was time for her to take the reins of her career and headed alone to the UK for two months.

The 26-year-old said she had to hold her own with hitmakers behind chart wins for

Olly Murs, Lana Del Rey, David Guetta and Kylie instead of being “extremely protected”.

“Going away on my own was so important for this new song and album,” she said.

“I have always been cradled by such a supportive team and I really needed to be independent and to have them trust me that I know what I am doing.”

Barefoot and stunning in a Romance Was Born dress, Mauboy looks exactly like the confident young woman she has become in the past year both as an artist and style ingenue courted by the country’s most innovative designers.

She said she had no fear about tackling the electronic pop sound which London has taken to the world and matching it on the charts.

“I’m not afraid to take on that genre and step into that world and bring my own twist to it. “There’s no hurt in doing that and I think I have really come out of my shell with this record,” Mauboy said.

She admitted it was tough being separated from her long-term partner Themeli Magripilis, but also managed to get a song out of it.

“About two years ago we were apart for four months, and that was hell. Two months was hard, but he has always been understanding; I’m very lucky,” she said.

“Loving long distance is definitely hard work and I’ve written about us and that is going to be a really open conversation to have with the public.”

This Ain’t Love will hit radio and online music stores today, with Mauboy hopeful her album will be finished before the end of the year.

She will also launch her own fragrance, Be Beautiful, which she said was inspired by her native Darwin.
