Jack White’s bizarre backstage demands
WE all love a good rider to peruse — and this one is up there when it comes to weird demands.
A student newspaper, The Oklahoma University Daily, published American rocker Jack White’s backstage demands prior to his performance at the University of Oklahoma.
While the singer skipped the alcohol, there were very specific details about how his guacamole should be made.
The recipe stipulates “8 large Haas avocados” should be used, “cut in half and with the pips saved”.
And just in case you were unsure of how to cube an avocado, “dice with a butter knife, 3-4 slits down, 3 or 4 across.”
They also express not to “mush the avocados too much” because they “want it chunky”
More importantly, it was a “NO BANANA TOUR”.
Yes, seriously.
“We don’t want to see bananas anywhere in the building.” And no fluorescent lighting in the VIP/artist guestroom. And no photos of White in or directly outside the venue”.
Geez!
During the concert, White publicly called out the paper for publishing his contract and tour rider, which had how much the university would be paying him for the appearance. That number was a cool $ US80,000 ($ 102,000) plus 90 per cent of all tickets sales.
The paper hit back defending the publishing citing the Freedom of Information Act.
In the days following, The OU Daily reported, the university was informed it was black-listed by William Morris Entertainment for any future performances by Jack White or other artists represented by the talent company.
White’s management issued a statement emphasising that neither Jack nor his management said he would never play the university again.
“The most important function of a rider is that it lays out optimal technical specifications to ensure the audience has the best experience possible,” part of the statement read.
“For that, Jack hires a team of very qualified touring professionals who write the rider and attempt to execute a professional and pleasant experience for all involved.”
