THE Voice mentor Kirk Pengilly says looks are important in the music industry.

Pengilly, from supergroup INXS, told Confidential “I’d love to say looks don’t matter, but we all know that’s not how it is.

“In this day and age, how you look is a big part of the whole package. Image has always been a big part of the industry. I remember, growing up as a kid, bands really had an image, and they set the fashions. It’s important.”

Pengilly’s comments contradict the spirit of The Voice, particularly the blind auditions, where coaches judge a singer on vocal ability only.

But he said reality singing shows are valid.

“It’s a great way to discover talent and engage a massive audience. Yes, it’s a fast track to the industry, but it’s really they do with it afterwards,” Pengilly said.

Pengilly will assist The Voice coach Kylie Minogue on the show.

Other mentors are singer Megan Washington (with Joel Madden), DJ Havana Brown (Ricky Martin) and rapper apl.de.ap (will.i.am).

Pengilly’s key words to the aspiring singers are relax and connect.

“On a holistic level, my advice is be true to yourself in whatever you do. Don’t try and be something you’re not,” he said.

“Make the music you want to make.”

He said INXS followed those rules all the way to the world wide success.

“We had a motto: ‘Whatever It Takes.’

“That meant endless touring for years and years and years all over the world.

“But everything aligned and it worked.”
