IT is the mystery which has perplexed paparazzi and stumped security for years. How do teenage girls discover the whereabouts of their favourite boy band.

British pop rock tourists The Vamps have broken their code and it is called the Doorknob Technique.

The four musicians, Brad Simpson, James McVey, Connor Ball and Tristan Evans, said their fans are junior detectives more successful at finding the band than any paparazzi pursuit.

With a gaggle of girls patiently waiting for the rising pop rock stars outside the back alley entrance to their Sydney record label offices, drummer Evans paid tribute to the forensic work of their fans.

“They can find what floor and what room you are in by the doorknob or some other thing like that,” he said.

“If you post a picture with a door in it, they will find out which hotel you are in by looking. they will look at the rooms on every hotel website to find the same doorknob. They’ve walked straight into our rooms if we’ve left the door latched.

“They put paparazzi and anyone else looking for you to shame. Me and Connor were sharing room and they walked into.”

The Vamps, who are more like 5 Seconds of Summer than One Direction, conquered the global charts last year with their debut record Meet The Vamps.

Like 5SOS, the four best mates went from playing to 30 people in a pub to selling out two O2 arenas in London.

While they are living the dream, the hard work demanded chasing the success of their Can We Dance and Somebody To You hit singles around the world has taken its toll with guitarist McVey, sporting a bandaged wrist, unable to play on their Australian tour.

He will still join them on stage and sing, or as frontman Simpson said “be our vibe guy”.

“I got repetitive strain from playing guitar so had to have some surgery to fix it. Ii can’t play guitar for two months,” he said.

The band kick off their Australian tour at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion tomorrow night and then Festival Hall, Melbourne on Saturday, the Riverstage, Brisbane on Monday, Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Wednesday and HBF Stadium, Perth on Friday.
