RADIO BACK IN FASHION AGAIN

The snobby concept of “selling out” has always bugged me. Get popular…but not too popular ‘cause there goes your cred man. Nirvana showed us the way forward (as usual) in 1994 when they released a Video Album Live! Tonight! Sold Out!! They owned it.

Perennial ‘90s underdogs Gaslight Radio deserved to be Pavement-big but never quite broke through. That’s why this neat little SCOOP feels so satisfying. Armani has chosen their song Change The Ending from 2006 album Good Heavens Mean Time to be the new sound for the 2015 Emporio Armani Fall Campaign.

“The song was sourced old school, someone heard it on Youtube, and the negotiations started,” says Martin Cooke, who started Gaslight Radio with his brother Rory way back in 1998 and earned an ARIA nomination for Hitch On Leaves in 1999.

“Gaslight Radio were never about the awards, the industry schmoozing, always about the art, and it’s great that people are rediscovering us. And just now we may be overnight sensations…after two decades,” he says.

The Cooke brothers both have different projects up and running: Rory started The Eliza Band and Martin got Forty Thousand Sisters together.

“The GLR art is out there in the stratosphere for people to discover. But we are not overly sentimental and we love that we existed in that time, in the 90s, before the internet.”

Let’s cut to the How much are talking, Cookie Monster?

“I would say it’s a small fortune in 1990s standard! It’s still being negotiated, but it’s in Euros, which is sweet…just waiting for that 100k plus Volks Wagen ad, so we can knock them back like Beach House did,” he jokes.

ROYALE SANS CHEESE

The Sydney Opera House staff are still recovering from Royal Headache’s Vivid Live show a month back. There was a stage invasion, the police came in and got a little rough with patrons. After clearing the stage the band eventually completed their set with a cover of Teardrops by Womack & Womack.

Wiley leadsinger Shogun later quipped the group came back on stage because he “didn’t want to see the police start breaking people’s arms and faces. I could see it could easily go in that direction because drunk rock’n’roll fans are dumb and police are even dumber.”

Royal Headache’s new single High is dumb and smart in equal measures. It bodes well for their next album due August 21 and the band are currently touring the US with Total Control.

Shogun told Rolling Stone there will be piano and organ tunes on the album and added

“I left the band [in 2014] and they said, ‘Fair enough, but we have to finish the [new] record. It’s that one umbilical cord that’s kept me connected to the f—ing band.”

Have a listen to it at ace local blog I Heard a Whisper.

STATUES OF LIBERTY

Nicolas Oojes (NO ZU) and Tom Gould (World’s End Press) have broken free with a new project Statue. They’ve been keeping it on the DL now it’s hitting the DF. Dan Whitford (Cut Copy) included Statue Theme it on last years’ Cutters compilation Oceans Apart and now they’re releasing a four track vinyl titled Built. Think Mediterranean disco, ‘80s ref whistles and all material “constantly refers back to themes around STATUE. It is also a play on the fact it is visceral live dance music but based around a concept of stillness,” says Gould. Stone-faced dance!
