ROCK star daughter Frances Bean Cobain says her father Kurt Cobain sacrificed “every bit of who he was” when he became famous and that he never wanted to be “the voice of a generation”.

Frances has spoken for the first time about the death of her father in 1994 and the struggles he faced while fronting Nirvana.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Frances, 22, said: “I think that was one of the main triggers as to why he felt he didn’t want to be here and everyone would be happier without him,” she said.

“In reality, if he had lived, I would have had a dad. And that would have been an incredible experience.”

Kurt killed himself on April 5, 1994, at the family’s home in Seattle.

Frances also spoke about Montage of Heck, the HBO documentary she executive produced about Kurt’s life. She described the film as “the closest thing to having Kurt tell his story in his own words”, according to Rolling Stone.

“He wanted his band to be successful,” Frances said.

“But he didn’t want to be the f … ing voice of a generation.”

Frances also confessed that she doesn’t really like Nirvana.

“I don’t really like Nirvana that much. Sorry, promotional people, Universal. I’m more into Mercury Rev, Oasis, Brian Jonestown Massacre.”

But Frances told Rolling Stone that she cries when she hears the song Dumb.

“I cry every time I hear that song,” she said in the interview.

“It’s a stripped-down version of Kurt’s perception of himself — of himself on drugs, off drugs, feeling inadequate to be titled the voice of a generation.”

Beginning as an observation of the music of Kurt Cobain and his Seattle/Portland contemporaries, Kurt and Courtney took a different turn when Courtney Love intervened. What emerges is a powerful examination of the destructive power of corporate America, economic depression and freedom of speech.
