HIT sits down with Jamie Lidell to talk about new sounds and working in Nashville on his fifth album.

1. LIDELL BIT OF FEEL GOOD

The eccentric English future-soul chap is bringing the party with his fifth album, where he re-suits and reboots himself as Jamie Lidell. "There are no ballads, all beats," he chirps from Nashville, the new base for Lidell and his wife. "We met Harmony Korine, Pat from the Black Keys and loads of characters within a week."

2. DID YOU JUST DROP SOMETHING?

"It sounds like blatant name-dropping, but it’s what makes Nashville great," he says. Jack White moved there a few years back and many followed. Has Lidell bumped into him? "No, only flat white for me, mate. He’s an elusive character." Lidell has been busy anyway, hunkered down in his studio making tracks.

3. CREATIVE PURSUITS

The album opens with the big-band ’80s groove of I’m Selfish. "It’s me. I continue to be selfish. It’s a bad habit that a lot of artists tend to have," Lidell says. "It’s a chance for me to make an anthem of that character trait. If I sing it every night, I might erase that from myself. I’m selfish to record a song called I’m Selfish."

4. BECK TO THE FUTURE

On the epic summer jam Big Love, "I made my first MPC beat with the drums I did (on Compass) with Beck," he says. "I put the iPhone next to the sink and sang the chorus while washing up; classic way of writing."

HEAR Jamie Lidell (Inertia) out February 22.
