THEY call Disneyland the happiest place on earth.

A hometown Kylie Minogue show gives it a hefty nudge for wall-to-wall euphoria.

There’s a special energy when Melbourne’s most successful pop export is back in town.

It’s like a grand final for Kylie fans, except everyone goes home smiling.

Australians aren’t great at acknowledging success, it’s in our DNA prefer to focus on faults.

Kylie has always deflected negativity, maybe one of the reasons she’s about to clock up a remarkable 30 years in the most fickle business in the world.

There was also the seismic shift when Kylie moved from pop star to touring act.

It’s a cliche, but she’s become right at home on stage. Why not, these are her people.

The ones who have stuck by her, the ones who are more than aware of her skills and charm, the reason she’s outlasted countless others.

The Kiss Me Once tour is pretty much a greatest hits affair, with the best of her latest album cherrypicked (and the worst in dire ballad Beautiful - but hey, no one’s perfect).

Kylie isn’t one of those pop stars who jettisons her past.

There’s Step Back In Time, The Locomotion and even Tears on Your Pillow.

And in a medley to show Taylor Swift what pop actually sounded like in 1989, there’s Hand On Your Heart, I Should Be So Lucky (complete with the iconic bath scene from the video), Got to Be Certain, Never Too Late and Enjoy Yourself.

You may not hear them on radio as much as you should (radio tend to retire women over the age of 35) but Kylie’s last few albums have spawned some of her finest singles – Get Outta My Way (recently sampled by DJ Alesso), All the Lovers, In My Arms (written with Calvin Harris before anyone cared about him), Wow and Into the Blue.

In a lovely piece of pop serendipity, Minogue was joined by 74-year-old disco godfather Giorgio Moroder for their recent single Right Here, Right Now, where he reclaimed some of the vocoder action Daft Punk borrowed from him.

Moroder and Minogue also paid homage to his songwriting and her record collection by covering Donna Summer’s classic I Feel Love.

Ironically, 30 years ago, Minogue covered another Moroder-produced Summer song on the initial demo that got her record deal to record The Locomotion. How’s that for coming full circle?

And while she inspired one INXS song when dating Michael Hutchence (Suicide Blonde), she pays tribute to the man who changed her by reminding the world how ridiculously sexy Need You Tonight remains.

Taking the “it ain’t broke” approach to cover versions, it’s a pretty magical moment and one that must be highly emotional for Minogue.

The Melbourne crowd were also used to recreate the moment Molly Meldrum returned to Rod Laver Arena after his accident in a scene to be used in Channel 7’s upcoming mini-series.
