Released in March 1990, the song, a tribute to dance of the same name, mentions a list of 16 American icons — “ladies with an attitude” and “fellas that were in the mood” — including (in order): Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Joe DiMaggio, Marlon Brando, James Dean, Grace Kelly, Jean Harlow, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rodgers, Rita Hayworth, Bacall, Katharine Hepburn, Lana Turner and Bette Davis.

While nearly half of the famous names mentioned had passed before the song came out — most notably Monroe, Dean and Harlow — nine have died in the proceeding 24 years.

Garbo, who died less than a month after the single’s release, was the first to fall prey to the curse of Vogue, the
New York Post
reports.
