IT’S very fashionable to hate on Delta Goodrem nowadays.

But as a card-carrying fan of Delta’s musical career, even this writer will admit to wincing at her latest move, a cringe-worthy toothpaste ad in which she enthusiastically strips while singing Joe Cocker’s You Can Leave Your Hat On.

Bless her, Goodrem attacks the role with gusto, prowling and vamping through the 90-second advertisement for Oral B 3D White.

Looking good here, Delta.

It’s a commercial association that also saw Goodrem perform on an Oral B float during this year’s Mardi Gras parade — something of a step down from the previous year, when she headlined the parade’s after party.

Delta’s been no stranger to questionable commercial endorsements through her career — remember those Delta So-Goodrem soy milk ads? — but it’s bizarre to see a singer whose debut album sold 1.2 million copies in Australia alone (Innocent Eyes is the sixth highest-selling album in Australian history, fact fans) throwing herself into a striptease in an advertisement for whitening strips, a decade on from those heights.

Goodrem’s last single, the smashing pop song
Heart Hypnotic
, was released a year ago. In an interview with Confidential today, Goodrem says 2014 is all about creating new music:

“I feel like I’m writing the best songs I’ve ever written,” she says.

Let’s hope so.
