THERE’S a lot of things Las Vegas band Imagine Dragons didn’t see coming when they exploded on the charts three years ago. But the biggest surprise? Crazed groupies.

“The other day we had this issue where we had to call the police because somebody had gotten on our tour bus and left some things on the pillows,” frontman Dan Reynolds told news.com.au.

“We played this festival and this fan pretended to be a masseuse and they got backstage somehow. They went up to our drummer and was like, ‘hey if you come into this trailer I’ll give you a massage’.

“Anyway, he takes off his shirt and he’s getting this massage — but when he ends up walking out security sees her and she just took off running.

“We ended up having to put her on this security list but somehow she was spotted backstage again and then she got into our tour bus and left a note for our drummer on his pillow.”

And before you get any ideas, they’ve upped security ahead of their Australian tour in September.

It’s been three years since their debut album Night Visions spawned the monster single “Radioactive”.

The song sold more than 7.5 million singles in the US and took out the Grammy for Best Rock Performance. It was also the theme song for Transformers 4 and featured in a swag of video games, TV shows and advertisements.

So with the release of last month’s sophomore album, Smoke + Mirrors, how does it feel having to live up to one specific song?

“I can honestly tell you that when we created this album we never thought about that,” Reynolds says.

“I don’t know if it’s out of stupidity — but we just created an album. Because we wrote a lot of it while we were on the road touring so we weren’t really thinking, ‘oh we need to write singles, or we need to write another “Radioactive”’ … we literally were just creating and having fun writing.”

And even though the band is riding the wave of success, Reynolds has been open about the lows that come with it, admitting earlier this year that he’s been “depressed as hell”.

“Your life changes when things like this happens,” he says.

“When fame comes into the picture … the way you view the world is different, for better or for worse. And it takes some adapting to and I’d be lying to tell you that everything was the same in my life because it’s not.

“You have people who reach out to you that were never really your friend in the first place that want things from you because of the fame and the career — and then you have the real friends who’ve been with you forever who you question … their motives … if you say a joke and everybody laughs, even if it was funny, you don’t know.

“I haven’t quite wrapped my head around it.”

Imagine Dragons will tour Australia in September.

Tickets go on sale Thursday, 26th March.
