The result of this Sunday’s Reclink Community Cup has already been decided.

Community, music, streaking are the real winners and football is the only real loser.

I jest, the Rockdogs versus Triple R 102.7FM/PBS 106.7FM Megahertz game is always good for some rough and tumble and a few slinky passages of play resulting in delicious sausage rolls. It’s a long way to the shop…

The theme this year is Feelin’ Kinda Sporty and before we check in with the captains, let’s go to the source, Dave Graney, the man who put out a song of the same name in 1997 not long after he was crowned Best Male Vocalist at the ARIA Awards.

Graney explains the ethos behind the song which contains the dynamite line: “I feel like laying down the law, I feel all-powerful.”

The avid hip hop fan says: “The title is from Schooly D ‘It was Sat’day night ‘n’ I was feelin kinda sporty’.”

He further elucidates: “Standin’ on a street corner – waitin’ for no one’ is the beatnik definition of power.”

Muso about town and certified Dog of Rock, Ash Naylor (Even) has a few players to watch out for this Sunday: “Benny Walker, Dave Larkin and Stacey Pommer,” he says, and adds the dark horses are “Nick Cooper, Grant Relf from Bodyjar and Sam Reiher”.

PBS Breakfast Spread announcer and co-captain of Megahertz, Cat McGauran, is typically enigmatic when asked about which stars to watch in her squad. “The entire zodiac is represented in the Megahertz. Take your pick,” she says mystically, adding, “our dark horses shall remain dark.”

After Adam Goodes’ excellent war dance goal celebration, will Rockdogs be emulating his feets/feats? “Maybe something Mark ‘Jacko’ Jackson-esque. Handstands in the goal square perhaps,” Naylor contends.

McGauran believes her team’s dances will be bountiful.

“There’ll be so many, you’ll lose count,” she deadpans.

Naylor is quick to shirtfront the suggestion some of his players are good from far, far from good: “Every Rockdog could break this game wide open. No passengers Mikey!” he yells.

The musical line-up this year is in career-best form: Ally Spazzy’s Kiddyrock & The Cool Bananas (12.10pm), Pearls (12.45pm), Adalita (1.30pm), Feelin’ Kinda Sporty cover by Paul Kelly & Dan Kelly (2.10pm), The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra (half-time) and Graveyard Train (post-match).

Let’s let Graney have the last word. Grasshopper? “I hope Sunday is a very social day and that no bones are broken. Especially by the musicians playing as they need bones and limbs working to ply their arts the best.”

Tip: Rockdogs by 12 points. Go Megaz!

TELL HIM HE’S DREAMIN’

LA elfin Beck released new single Dreams two days ago. Being a devoted Beck acolyte (Beckolyte) — your scribe once gave him jelly beans and expensive shiraz — I had hopes for this being a return to Odelay/Guero form.

Does Beck nail it?

No, he mails it.

It’s a 3 star song at best, a swooping chorus nearly saves it but Beck can do much better.

Take more risks, Hansen.

MUST SEE THREE GIGS

1 DALLAS FRASCA

There is an inevitability to the power pop of Dallas Frasca. Australia’s a small market, they recently played to 40,000 in Le Mans in France for a 24hr Circuit race. Those are the sort of gigs they get now. On this Love Army tour ‘Frasca will not play songs, they’ll unleash them.

Howler, Brunswick, Fri, 8pm, $ 20, h-w-l-r.com

2 BEN MASON & GRAND SALVO

Like Gaslight Radio, The Smallgoods are one of those dreamy, deceptive indie bands who live on in more people’s hearts and minds than they’d ever know — they had panache. The Smallgoods’ Ben Mason’s third album is She’d Need a Heart.

Shadow Electric, Abbotsford, Fri, 7pm, $ 20

3 ABBE MAY & SONS OF RICO

Perth wild child Abbe May has a one-two gut-chin punch of albums to play: 2011’s guitardrenched Design Desire (which went very close to winning The AMP) and 2013’s Kiss My Apocalypse, a record of electronic escapades ‘n’ sexual intrigue. A rare local show, this one.

Flying Saucer Club, Elsternwick, Thu, 7pm. $ 15/$ 25. flyingsaucerclub.com.au
