Chart News: EXODUS: Biggest First Week Sales for a Kpop album

EXO’s Exodus charged into the Billboard charts for a record-setting week.

The K-pop boy band sold 6,000 copies of their new Exodus LP in the week ending April 5 (according to Nielsen Music). It’s the largest sales week ever for a K-pop act’s album in America. The effort lands the 10-member group at No. 70 on the Top Album Sales chart and No. 90 on the Billboard 200.

The count beats 2NE1′s Crush album, which hit No. 61 on the Billboard 200 after selling 5,000 copies in the week ending March 2, 2014, and formerly held the record for K-pop’s biggest sales week.

With their chart entry as the full 10-member EXO group, the act now beats a chart record formerly held by six of their members. Last year, EXO-K (a six-member, Korea-focused splinter group of EXO) sent their Overdose EP to No. 129 on the Billboard 200 after selling 3,000 copies. It was the highest-charting album by a K-pop boy band, beating out BIGBANG’s Alive that peaked at No. 150 with 5,000 units moved.

Now, EXO can not only claim the biggest sales week for a K-pop ever, but also the highest-charting album for male groups.

Exodus’ performance sees EXO earn their second consecutive No. 1 on Billboard’s World Albums chart too. Following their chart-topping XOXO album from 2013, the outfit now become the fourth K-pop act to land a second album atop the chart. The guys join Girls’ Generation-TTS and G-Dragon (both with two entries), and fellow boy band B.A.P (who have notched three chart-toppers).

Elsewhere, EXO send nine entries to World Digital Songs this week too with Exodus lead single "Call Me Baby" leading the pack at No. 2, selling 5,000 copies. "El Dorado" and "Exodus" also land within the Top 10, at Nos. 7 and 8 respectively. Also making bows are "Transformer" (No. 11), "Hurt" (No. 14), "Playboy" (No. 18), "What If…" (No. 24) along with the band’s 2013 single "Overdose" (which moves No. 21-23).
