SPS CHART?
It Stands for Sales Plus Streaming, Which Tells You What It Is Without Referencing Any Diseases

Presenting the brand-spankin’-new HITS SPS Chart. That stands for “Sales Plus Streaming,” which captures all kinds of consumer behavior, including the purchasing of albums and singles and audio streaming—without using the word “consumption,” which always makes us think of tuberculosis.
Anyhoo, in the new chart’s calculus, 10 singles = one album and 1,500 audio streams = one album. One album, of course, equals 16 albums. Just kidding; it’s still one album.
The SPS Chart does not include video streams (VEVO and YouTube), though we feel strongly that this vein of consumer activity most definitely should be counted and will be in the future. Of course, once folks start factoring the hotly contested realm of user-generated video—kittens stumbling on a turntable to the dulcet tones of Meghan Trainor, say—the game will change even more.
We think this new chart comes closer to measuring the pop-music zeitgeist and consumer appetite than ever before. And if you can come up with a better name for it than SPS, kindly keep it to yourself.

Things that appear differently on the SPS Chart than on the Album Chart:
· Big Machine’s Taylor Swift increases over 60k without benefit of streaming, thanks entirely to massive single sales.
· Capitol’s Sam Smith and Republic’s Ariana Grande both add about 25k,, as both have been steady in both single sales and streaming.
· Columbia’s Hozier doubles sales due to strong streaming and his single flying into the Top 5 at iTunes.
· Hollywood’s Selena Gomez more than doubles with her single and streaming.
· Pearl/RCA Nashville’s Garth Brooks stays exactly the same, as he’s selling no singles and not streaming.
Things on the SPS Chart that aren’t on the Album Chart:
· Republic’s Hunger Games: Mockingjay—Part 1 score album. Over 80% comes from streaming and single sales on The Hanging Tree, sung by star Jennifer Lawrence.
· Two Iggy Azalea records: New Classic and Deluxe (both Grand Hustle/Def Jam), thanks to big singles and streams
· Meghan Trainor (Epic), who now has two huge singles and incredible streaming.
