A RAT in a hat is pretending to be Molly Meldrum on Twitter.

The fake Molly, or Folly, has been Tweeting under Molly’s name, using the music icon’s photograph and begging celebrities to follow him back.

The sham account has gained nearly 2000 followers in the last week and claims to be linked to Meldrum’s management company, Profile Talent.

Mark Klemens, managing director of Profile Talent has confirmed his company has nothing to do with the phony account and would be taking action to deal with the misrepresentation.

Folly has fooled stars such as Richie Sambora, Darren Hayes, The Veronicas, Elle MacPherson, Guy Sebastian, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Tracy Grimshaw, Samantha Jade, Kate Ceberano, Richard Wilkins, Tottie Goldsmith and Rachel Leahcar to follow him, despite not being verified by Twitter.

When Folly was called out on Twitter yesterday the impostor bizarrely noted: “It’s a shame and I feel sorry for people on here that have to make up lies about me just because I choose not to follow them.”

Folly then repeated the claim the site was run by Profile and “to avoid confusion” Meldrum’s initials would be added to tweets supposedly written by Molly, a man whose skill set does not extend to texting, let alone tweeting.

The prolific identity thief has posted nearly 800 tweets in three weeks, all pretending to be Meldrum and trying to engage with a raft of celebrities, most of who have realised he is a pretender. The fake has also blocked anyone who has labelled him a fraud.

Folly has done everything from tweet about “personally mourning” Phillip Hughes’ death to claim to have “lodged a complaint with certain people in the Australian media” over Katy Perry’s run in with a local paparazzi photographer.

The real Molly Meldrum has been approached for comment.

It is the second time a sad fraudster has impersonated Meldrum on Twitter, with a suspiciously similar page being shut down in 2011 after Meldrum told News Corp “It’s an impostor. I’m not on Twitter.”

This latest fake Molly account has been reported to Twitter.
