FAMED Aussie DJ Ajax was reportedly killed in a car accident in Melbourne early yesterday morning.
Ajax, real name Adrian Thomas, was one of the founding members of the Bang Gang crew who were largely responsible for the uptake of electro music into mainstream Australia.
He is believed to have been hit by a truck when he ran onto the road in Melbourne’s inner north.
Police have confirmed that a man in his 20s ran out onto the road in front of a northbound truck on College Crescent, Parkville, just before 1am on Thursday morning.
The man died instantly and his death has not been added to the road toll. Police will compile a report for the coroner.
Ajax had been voted one of Australia’s top five DJ every year since 2005 and took out the number one spot on the inthemix 50 poll in both 2006 and 2007.
He was also named 3D’s World DJ of the year three times.
He was a regular performer at major music festivals including Parklife, Big Day Out, Stereosonic, We Love Sounds, Splendour in the Grass and also founded Sweat It Out records, that included artists like Yolanda Be Cool and Oh Snap! On its roster.
Chinese Laundry, a well known nightclub in Sydney which hosted Ajax as a resident DJ for over 7 years, was among the first to break the news on social media.
"Absolutely heart breaking news about one of our long time former resident Dj’s AJAX," they wrote on their Facebook page.
"Ajax was resident at Chinese Laundry for over 7 years and was a great friend to everyone here & an amazing DJ that was always a crowd favourite. You will be sorely missed by everyone who knew you and everyone at Chinese Laundry. RIP Buddy".
