IT was the song all the biggest names rejected and now All About That Bass has catapulted its young songwriter Meghan Trainor to global pop stardom.

The 50s doo-wop meets hip hop hit has been embraced by millions of women worldwide for its positive body image message.

The 20-year-old prodigiously talented singer and songwriter had spent two years writing songs for other artists when she got her big break with the ditty celebrating curves and confidence with lyrics including “’Cause every inch of you is perfect, from the bottom to the top.”

Trainor, whose influences range from Frank Sinatra to Trinidadian soca music, had sent the song far and wide, hoping one of the reigning female chart stars would record it.

But when influential hitmaker LA Reid heard it playing in one of his label offices, he ordered his talent scouts to find Trainor and sign her.

The doo-wop update of All About That Bass found no champions at radio but when the pastel explosion of the video hit the cyberwaves, Trainor was quickly on her way to No. 1 in Australia and this week, back home in the US.

It has already had more than 60 million views on YouTube.

Its overnight success is sure to usher in a raft of 50s-inspired tunes with empowering lyrics to shift focus from the over-sexualised booty-shaking of her female pop peers.

Even at her young age, Trainor has become the agony aunt for teen girls battling bullying over their size and communicates daily with many of them directly on social media.

“They write me essays. A lot of girls will say they hate themselves, they cut themselves, (but now) they are going to try to love themselves,” Trainor said.

“I have had mothers thank me … it’s been a crazy time.”

More than two million downloads of All About That Bass later and Trainor hit No. 1 in America this week in the wake of stand out performances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Fallon declared the performance of the song with The Roots only playing classroom instruments was “the best in history”.

“I walked in there and almost died because it’s Jimmy and it’s The Roots,” she said.
