IT’S been dubbed the spike of sadness.

As news broke that One Direction band member Zayn Malik was leaving, fans everywhere took to their music for comfort.

The outpouring of grief has been well documented, and many fans sought to ease the blues with a little 1D love.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, One Direction fans dominated Spotify on Thursday night in the wake of the announcement of Zayn’s departure.

For over an hour, the streaming service saw a huge spike in the number of plays of One Direction songs — a moment the company referred to as the “spike of sadness.”

Compared to average listener activity at the particular time, there was a 769 per cent increase in streams in the United States and a 330 per cent increase globally.

Among the most-played songs from the band were I Wish, Gotta Be You, Moments, Same Mistakes and Spaces.
