SAVAGE Garden singer Darren Hayes has dropped the dreaded phrase ‘Do you know who I am?” to test his residual fame.
Unfortunately for Hayes, one of Australia’s most successful musicians, a selection of Americans did not.
The experiment was done as part of Hayes’ new comedy podcast He Said He Said.
Comedy partner Tim Stanton challenged Hayes to test whether he was still famous by asking strangers in Santa Monica if they remembered him or Savage Garden.
The participants chosen had no idea until prompted by playing a grab of Savage Garden’s international hit from 1997 Truly Madly Deeply.

The Australian introduces himself by his full name to some who still have no clue who he is.
“I was in a pop group in Australia, I had a huge No. 1 single around the world,” Hayes says at one point. “I’ve sold like 30 million albums and had two No. 1 singles in the United States. We’re trying to work out why I’m not famous.”
One girl, when shown the Savage Garden album cover, also can’t pick which member of the duo Hayes is.

The tongue in cheek clip ends by stating 2015 marks ‘The Death of Darren’s Celebrity’.
Savage Garden’s hits including Truly Madly Deeply and I Knew I Loved You continue to be highly lucrative, still achieving regular airplay in the US and Europe.
Hayes, who has stepped away from music for other challenges, is preparing for the release of a new Savage Garden compilation, The Singles, next week.
It contains a previously unreleased ballad from the duo’s earliest recording sessions called She.
Savage Garden’s two studio albums, their self-titled debut and final release Affirmation will also be remastered and reissued with bonus features.
