THE winner of Triple J’s Hottest 100 of 2014 has finally been revealed, and it was Chet Faker who landed the coveted top spot with his single ‘Talk is Cheap’.

Coming in at number two was hot favourite, Peking Duk with ‘High’, and at number three, Hilltop Hoods with ‘Cosby Sweater’.

Talk is Cheap

“Talk is Cheap dropped right at the start of 2014. By year’s end, it was still sounding as fresh as the first day we played it,” said Triple J’s Music Director, Richard Kingsmill.

“Chet played and produced the whole album himself (bar one guitar solo). The way the sax starts the song is just magical and sucks you right in. The song sounds simple, until you hear all the instruments and voices at work. You’re kept right there until the end, when Chet Faker’s layered vocals bring the song to a fitting close.”

Faker scored two more spots inside the top 10, with ‘Gold’ coming seventh and ‘1998’ coming eighth.

It’s been a controversial Hottest 100 this year, with debate raging for the last few weeks as to whether Swift’s Shake It Off, which dominates commercial radio, should be allowed in the count. All was revealed early Monday morning when the station announced it had disqualified her from the countdown because “it became pretty clear, pretty quick that a lot of people just wanted to prod some ‘hipsters’ for the lulz” by supporting an internet campaign to have her win.

Last year, Melbourne singer/songwriter Vance Joy’s Riptide beat favourite Royals by Lorde to top the annual music poll.
