THE Rolling Stones will ­return to Australia in March for concerts after being signed to open the revamped Adelaide Oval.

Promoters have been negotiating with the band for more than a year to secure them for the outdoor spectacular on March 22.

The news follows the ­announcement John Farnham and Lionel Richie will team up for a national tour in March.

Farnham, who has enjoyed sold-out runs with double-handed shows featuring Olivia Newton-John, Tom Jones and Stevie Nicks, said co-headlining a tour with the evergreen Richie had topped his wishlist for several years.

The Rolling Stones are to announce more concerts in Australia and one in New Zealand in coming weeks.

“We’re really looking forward to doing this gig. It will be the first time we’ve been to Adelaide in nearly 20 years, so see you there!” frontman Mick Jagger said in a video message.

His musical partner of 50 years, Keith Richards, promised to own the oval after their concert.

“See you on March 22 when we’ll take over your new stadium and make it our own,” he quipped.

The band has been on a victory lap of the world to celebrate their 50th anniversary but had been yet to announce any shows for Australia.

Guitarist Mick Taylor, who was a member of the Stones from 1969-74, will join the band on the Australian tour.

Richie, who scored rave reviews for his 2011 winery and arena shows, praised Farnham’s talent: “He pours his heart into a ballad and gives everything to an ­anthem.”

He and Farnham will ­appear at Rod Laver Arena on March 16, with tickets ­going on sale on November 29.

Tickets for the ­Rolling Stones’ Adelaide show are on sale from ­November­ 25.
