This softening in its rate of decline, compared to a 20 per cent drop in 2012 (and a 7.9 per cent decrease in 2014), underlines the format’s resilience and suggests that it may yet have a viable future for some years to come as part of a multi-channel consumer landscape alongside vinyl, streaming and downloads.

Top 5 Selling Albums:
25 Adele 2,604,850
X Ed Sheeran 1,001,845
In The Lonely Hour Sam Smith 925,147

Did you know less than 1% of the world’s population are currently paying for on-demand music streaming services?

The wider industry continues to hope that the likes of Spotify and Apple Music will provide salvation – and early signs from the Nordics and other territories certainly provide reason for hope.

But why are the vast majority of people refusing to put their hand in their pocket for ‘all the music in the world’?

New research out of the US from Nielsen Music brings us closer to the answer.

The research company has conducted what it calls ‘a comprehensive, in-depth study of consumer interaction with music in the United States’ for its Nielsen Music 360 Report – analysing the responses of more than 3,300 US music fans.

The Report covers a range of topics and provides reason to be cheerful: apparently 75% of US consumers now listen to music online in a typical week, for example.

There’s also a shot in the arm for radio.

According to Nielsen’s respondents, 61% of people say they discover new music on the wireless today, which has actually increased from the 57% who agreed in 2014.

Meanwhile, streaming services, including YouTube, inform 27% of people about new music.

That’s less than a third of radio’s influence, but also behind the recommendations of friends and family (45%) and movies / movie soundtracks (31%).

Nielsen then directly addresses the elephant in the room: why aren’t more people paying a $ 9.99 subscription price for streaming?

The ‘under 1%’ stat that started this article, by the way, comes from the fact that out of 7 billion people in the world, just 41m coughed up for an on-demand music streaming subscription last year, according to the IFPI – 0.58% of the world’s populace.

That’s lower than the total number of people paying for a Netflix subscription around the world every month.

Even just in the US, we can deduce that music streaming isn’t exactly flying just yet.

According to the IFPI, paid-for music streaming services accrued $ 494.7m in the US in 2014. Across a population of 319m people, that worked out at an average of just $ 1.55 per person.

Another way to slice those figures: $ 494.7m equates to around 4.1m X $ 120-per-year subscriptions.

Side shows rather than an all-day and night festival became their preferred haunt, leaving the cops-and-dogs greeting party and marauding hordes of overexcited young people to well, the young people. As it should be.

The national festival calendar has undergone a drastic downsize in recent years with several of the enduring events calling it a day and canny promoters, who also happen to be of a certain age, are creating smaller events tailored for the music fan who might be sporting some salt and pepper at the temples.

The reboot of the boutique festival focuses on the experiential elements which will appeal to an older audience. The location has to be somewhere different with a lot of greenery. The food and beverage offerings must be more than a bucket of chips, slice of pizza and mid-strength beer. Capacity should be comfortable and queues minimal. And you shouldn’t need four wheel drive capabilities on the pram.

Fairgrounds Festival takes the family-friendly element further than anything else on offer on this year’s weekend calendar.

The inaugural event will be held at the historic Berry Showgrounds on the NSW South Coast with an eclectic line-up which includes headliner Father John Misty, C.W. Stoneking, Jessica Pratt, Mercury Rev, RATATAT, Royal Headache and Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

Curated by Handsome Tours after a two-year hunt for the right location, Fairgrounds is tailor made for the older music fan.

There is no VIP area because everyone gets the VIP treatment. If you want to bring a rug or deckchair you can; just don’t expect to plant them in the moshpit because there will be moshing.

“There is no festival in Australia like this. It is for a demographic that is starved of an outdoor music experience,” promoter Colin Daniels says.

“The primary motivation behind this is us, the festival we want to go to with our friends instead of being surrounded by drunk 18-year-olds with their shirts off. You will be treated like an adult.”

Daniels and his mates, like most humans of a certain age, do not want to queue for the bars or the toilets, with or without their kids.

In fact, they may want to enjoy a set or two without their vintage rock T-shirt wearing offspring.

So the little ones will be catered for with a festival inside the festival.

“We will have everything from a planetarium and a hay bale maze and there will be childcare so if you want to drop off your little ones to go see Royal Headache, you can,” Daniels says.

“We want them to enjoy their own festival experience.”

And for the adults who want a bit of playtime which isn’t related to music, you will be able to play boules, badminton, croquet and Twister or compete in the sack and egg and spoon races.

NATALIE Imbruglia can’t remember the last song she shared with a boyfriend or used to nurse a broken heart.

“I have been single for so long, sweetheart, I can’t even remember. I am serious,” she says.

And then she laughs.

An examination of the tracklisting of Imbruglia’s selection of covers written and recorded by men on her new album Male did make me wonder if any of them were ever “our songs”, the ones that soundtrack a love affair.

Or the songs you play over and over again after a breakup.

There are the happy songs — The Cure’s celebration of falling in love (Friday, I’m In Love) alongside The Who’s Let My Love Open The Door.

And the sad songs including I Will Follow You Into The Dark – a song whose beauty provoked audible sobs during Death Cab For Cutie’s recent tour – and Neil Young’s Only Love Will Break Your Heart.

But if you are searching for odes or arrows directed at her former husband Daniel Johns or other past lovers, you will not find them.

“I am a romantic. Like any other girl, I dream about finding love or mourning over love lost, so I can draw from that to connect with a song,” she says.

“Because I am in the public eye, people are always looking to pin you down to say your music is about one thing or another.

“But this is my album and these are songs for me. I don’t even remember what you are talking about.”

In fact, Imbruglia points out her interpretations of these songs are as much the work of Imbruglia the actor as they are Imbruglia the singer.

It was acting she decided to focus on when she effectively quit the music business half a decade ago.

Her record label had been sold in the merger between Sony and BMG and most of the people she had worked with left or were made redundant. Her fourth album Come To Life fell through the cracks because the executives who inherited her in the record label machinations wanted to change it.

“In trying to please all these people, I found myself in a place where I didn’t feel like myself. I got fed up because all I wanted was an audience and to stand in front of a mic and sing,” she says.

“I didn’t feel inspired, I was frustrated so I stopped. It was the best thing I could have done.”

Imbruglia moved to Los Angeles to study for two years with respected acting coach Ivana Chubbuck and made her stage debut in a production of Alan Ayckbourn’s Things We Do For Love.

She had no desire to make another record.

“If something is not making you happy, stop doing it. I know I was lucky I could afford to do that but that was not wasted time. I honed my acting, I made my stage debut and the study I did helps with songwriting and singing and being able to deliver these songs,” she says.

As well as reconnecting with emotions she claims to have become diluted due to a lack of romantic relationships, acting appears to have unlocked fresh, strong tones in her voice.

The “character” who sings the dramatic reinvention of the Daft Punk and Julian Casablancas song Instant Crush is vastly different to the one whose voice gives Tom Petty’s The Waiting a breathy sweetness.

“I am an emotional being and I can go to those places when delivering a song. That could be the actress in me too,” she says.

“Sometimes it’s true that the song is a reflection of what’s going on in my life but I have been able to write songs that are so dark when blissfully happy and in a relationship.

“And artists want to go there. Part of what we do is wallow in those moods.”

She is a very convincing actor in the video to Instant Crush in which she plays a Stepford wife to a cold, distant husband.

There is an uncanny similarity in her performance to that in the video of Torn, the debut single which catapulted her from Neighbours star to global chart-topper.

“It’s so funny you picked up on that and I agree with you but I didn’t plan it,” she says.

“It wasn’t until I saw the rushes that I thought the way I look off camera and I am moving recalls how I am in Torn. I can’t stand still when I sing,” she says.

Perhaps the brightest song on an album of tracks penned and previously recorded by men is The Summer, a Josh Pyke song.

That suggestion came from her singer and songwriter sister Laura.

“I was talking to Laura about the shortlist I was looking at covering and she asked if I had thought of doing a Josh Pyke song. I love that guy so I dived into all his music and chose that song because for me it imbues that Australian vibe,” she says.

“He’s such a storyteller, he creates these beautiful little worlds.

“But I have to tell you, he also writes song that are very difficult to sing because he barely takes a breath. I literally had to plan where I was going to breathe.”
