The kazoo is one of the items Dickinson took with him on August 26, otherwise known as the day he made Maiden fans’ dreams come true by getting high with them. Really, really high.

Dickinson personally flew around 150 Iron Maiden fans and media from Cardiff, where he owns an aircraft maintenance facility, to Paris, where the British metal band recorded their new album The Book of Souls.

Fans were bussed to Guillaume Tell studio, a converted art deco cinema from the 1920s to see where the metal magic happened.

Dickinson, 57, introduced the first airing of the 92 minute double album which entered the Australian chart at No. 2 and the UK charts at No. 1 this week.

At Cardiff airport passengers were officially able to write ‘Flight 666’ on their customs declaration, the Maiden-friendly number given to the flight.

The Maiden fans, who paid around $ 600 for the return flights and accommodation in Paris, got

bespoke Flight 666 T-shirts.

Maiden’s monstrous mascot, Eddie, is visible all over the airport and even on the paddles on-ground safety staff are waving.

Dickinson pops his head out of the cockpit window as fans climb the stairs to the plane, many posing on the ground below him, throwing up metal signs for selfies.

Once on board, the pilot unnecessarily introduces himself to a round of cheers.

After the usual safety instructions, Dickinson has a special weapon to make sure everyone behaves on his watch — that kazoo.

The metal warrior then busts out the Benny Hill theme on kazoo.

“That song does sound especially ridiculous when played on the kazoo,” Dickinson explains a few days later.

Turns out Dickinson packs a kazoo whenever he flies. As well as the occasional charter flight for Maiden fans he’s also flown commercial routes for passengers who probably have no clue they’ve got a multi-millionaire, multi-million-selling rock star in the cockpit.

“The kazoo is very good for cheering people up at 4am when you need to do another flight to get people home and everyone’s down in the dumps,” Dickinson says. “Leap around a bit with a kazoo and everyone’s back on side.”

Unsurprisingly, the instrument has yet to surface on any of Iron Maiden’s 16 albums.

“Me, Nicko (McBrain, drums) and Davey (Murray, guitar) used to have a kazoo orchestra going in the back of the tour bus,” Dickinson says. “We had one of those drunken conversations, where we should all be locked up in a padded cell. We were saying ‘We could do a whole album on the kazoo’ and you wake up the next morning and go ‘What were we on? No. We won’t be doing that’. So the kazoo has yet to be on a Maiden album, but you never know your luck.”

Back on the short flight to Paris fans can’t hear The Book of Souls yet for security reasons, but are treated to a special in-flight refreshment: Trooper, Iron Maiden’s very own beer.

The fans range from lifers who discovered the band before their breakthrough 1982 album The Number of the Beast to teenagers who have had Maiden worship passed down. Two French teens discuss which eBay site they use to locate the vintage Maiden patches sewn onto their denim jackets, part of the metal uniform.

But aside from waving to Dickinson when boarding, the fans respect that for the flight to Paris he’s their pilot, not their rock hero.

Dickinson says he finds it strange to switch between his two jobs on special occasions like this.

“You have to compartmentalise it. You’ve got stuff going on outside the cockpit, you’re waving at people, they’re taking pictures, there’s lots of distractions. As soon as it’s down to business it’s a case of ‘Shut the window, shut the door, no we can’t do any more autographs, let’s get serious about the actual business of the flight’.”

For a man with a pretty interesting day job already, his work as a pilot is more than a mere hobby.

“It’s a completely different headspace from Maiden,” Dickinson says. “The flying bit is very internal. In Maiden you run around and show off the music to people and entertain them, it’s all very external. Flying is much more inside your head.

“Obviously it’s difficult to leap around the flight deck of an aeroplane when you’re strapped to the seat. Nobody really knows who you are, the flight deck door is always locked if you’re doing a normal flight.

“The satisfaction is in being anonymous and getting the job down efficiently and being on time. That involves quite a bit of problem solving, stuff that goes on in the background that hopefully the passengers never ever suspect. As far as they’re concerned it should be boring and seamless. But as far as you’re concerned as part of the flight crew your days can be quite interesting. But your job is to make the passenger’s day really quite dull.”

Not on this flight. Troopers downed, the plane lands in Paris and excited fans head to the studio. Dickinson arrives and points out where each band member set up to be recorded live.

“Put a drum kit in the middle of the room and it’s got space to breathe,” Dickinson says. “We’re recording real instruments and not enhancing everything electronically afterwards. Nothing wrong with that, kids record albums in their bedrooms now that sound amazing, but we’re Iron Maiden and we just can’t do that.”

As the 18 minute epic finale Empire of the Clouds ends, a 30-something man from Helsinki is in tears, proclaiming the album to be a “masterpiece”.

Relayed to Dickinson later on, the metal icon gets a bit misty himself.

“That’s so sweet,” Dickinson says. “That emotional response is the best thing you can possibly have.”

The band start touring The Book of Souls in February, a jaunt that will include their first shows in China and El Salvador. They’ll return to Australia in May.

At the Paris listening party, fans wonder out loud how the band will accommodate the lengthy new songs when touring a 92 minute double album.

Dickinson says they’re in the midst of trying to work out those logistics themselves, but there’ll be one absentee.

“Three songs off the new album is not enough. There’ll maybe be four or five. But we won’t be playing Empire (of the Clouds). It’s too ambitious and it’d dominate the set too much. That makes life a little bit easier.

“Some of the classics that we haven’t played for a couple of tours, we can bring some of those back. There’s a few songs people have been demanding for a couple of years, we might make a few people happy, they might get what they want. But you can’t do all of the tunes.

“Some songs we’ve been playing repeatedly over the past few tours so we can put those ones into mothballs for a while, make way for some other ones. We haven’t done the setlist in stone yet, we’ll put that out closer to the tour.”

Dickinson says the band take note of online feedback from fans.

“You get a feel of what the fans what, but you also have to go with what feels right for us and the effect we want to create as well. It’s important we’re not just a karaoke band. With the reaction to the new album, the excitement over it, and the last few albums, we’ve pretty much dismissed the idea of Iron Maiden being a nostalgia band, it’s just not the case.”

Indeed, for a double album released in 2015 by a band decades into their career The Book of Souls is getting roundly praised by critics.

“People genuinely seem to like it,” Dickinson says. “Even the people giving us begrudging praise, they seem to like it. When every single review is good some of them may be right!”

As with their last few tours, Maiden will tour the globe on their own private aircraft, Ed Force One, piloted by Dickinson. For this tour they’re upgrading from Boeing 757s to a Boeing 747-400 jumbo jet, which can transport the band, crew, mammoth stage production and equipment.

Dickinson will need special training to fly the new plane (he has a simulator set up in Cardiff) but isn’t rushing into it.

“Ideally you want to schedule the training to as close as possible to operating the real aeroplane,” he says. “You don’t want, what do they call it? Oh yeah, skillfade.”

During the Paris listening session, Dickinson is the first to embrace the elephant in the room. The singer was diagnosed with throat cancer early this year after finishing the recording of The Book of Souls, and this is the first chance for many fans to see him back in rude health.

“There’s reasons too tumerous to mention,” Dickinson jokes because he can.

Once diagnosed he obsessively researched what was being put into his body during chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

“In radiation your liver unzips itself and goes running down the road screaming ‘There’s a maniac inside!’ I did ask the doctor where it goes, they said the body tends to get rid of it. That means they don’t know! I’d like to know what they’re shoving into me, obviously it’s toxic, it’s not nice stuff.

“I was very keen to know why things worked, how they worked, what was being done to me. All the various mechanisms. For me it helped me stay positive and be in some way enthusiastic about all the crap that was going on. That’s me. Other people might deal with it in a different way.”

The singer, who has never smoked, has said getting a tumour on his tongue was likely due to the human papilloma virus. The HPV generally presents as a lump on the neck; Michael Douglas claimed his throat cancer was due to performing oral sex. Dickinson hopes his diagnosis will encourage men over 40 to get checked; the virus is the same that causes cervical cancer in women.

After having part of his tongue removed, Dickinson said his voice is almost matchfit again, but admits the new tour, 35 countries, 88,500km over seven months, is daunting.

“I look at the schedule and said to our manager ‘This is kind of exactly the same intensity of touring we had before, if not more so’. And he went ‘Ah, yeah, we’ve got to get around to all these places’. That’s okay, as long as you appreciate this could be a work in progress for the first few weeks. But let’s see.

“The key to all this is to allow a really good long period of rehearsal and run up to this to get the voice dialled in, get everything back in shape. Don’t try and climb the mountain by the steepest path, take the gradual way up.”

And as for those nagging rumours about the end being nigh? “I really hope this isn’t the last album.”

The singer, who is currently dating Australian billionaire James Packer, took to the stage at the Rishon Lezion Live Park Amphitheatre in Tel Aviv on Tuesday more than an hour behind schedule.

The delay prompted catcalls and jeers from the crowd, according to Haaretz.com.

Carey’s live debut in the country also came to an halt after the singer spotted audience members smoking and stopped the show to call them out.

“Whoever is smoking, please don’t smoke … Smoke whatever else you want, but tobacco kills my voice,” she said.

Prior to the show, Carey said she was aware of the call for artists to boycott Israel over the political strife in the region, but the singer told reporters that she would not be swayed by other people’s political agendas.

“I’ve always wanted to come here. I don’t care what other people’s political agendas are. I’m just an entertainer and I’m here. I’m happy to be here and I’m honoured to be here,” Carey said.

It was 2003, she had been driven way out west to Melbourne’s Highpoint Shopping Centre straight from the way out east set of Neighbours to sign copies of her debut album Innocent Eyes.

“I knew the singles had gone to No. 1 but I was so busy on Neighbours I didn’t really have any feeling of the gravity that was in the air or how people had connected with my music,” she says.

Waiting to go out on centre stage, Goodrem recalls asking “Is anyone actually here?”

Crowd estimates were at around 8000 people spread over several levels, all wanting facetime with the musician. It was the pre selfie era: full of hugs, signatures and a third party taking the photo.

“I’d never seen anything like that before,” Goodrem says. “I remember looking up at all the people and instantly it all felt real. I was blown away. They were telling me they could cut off the line to finish earlier and I said `No, if people came to say hi I’ll say hi back’. And it went for 14 hours. It was epic.”

Delta Goodrem has hit the in-store circuit religiously ever since, for almost every major single or album. The average length is around six hours. By 2003 terms, that’s a sprint.

The physical CD single effectively died in 2009 as digital downloads took over, but Goodrem’s record label Sony still manufacture a large amount of physical CDs for each of her single releases. Her fans like to collect them and it gives her something tangible to sign at in-stores, which also count towards the ARIA singles chart.

“I have always had fans who like to buy the physical CD single or album. I think it’s that tactile thing, I think that comes out in having something to hold or to sign.”

LATE NIGHT SIGNING

Even professional shoppers haven’t spent as much time inside Australian shopping centres as Delta Goodrem. They are her happy place, and not for retail therapy.

“We’ve shut down shopping centres, we’ve made shopping centres stay open until midnight,” she says. “There was one where I passed out out the back because I was so tired, I had a little rest and got up and back on stage and kept going. I love them because anyone can come. A concert can be $ 100 or more. This isn’t. All you have to do is buy a single, come and get it signed, have a chat. It’s not so much about me at all, in-stores are about the people sharing their stories with me. It’s truly been a unique and epic experience when it comes to instores and me. They’ve been epic though!’’

SIGN OF THE (VERY LONG) TIMES

Delta Goodrem is not a clock watcher.

“How do I do the long in-stores? I just keep going. I’m there to be meet everybody. I live by the motto ‘If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well or you don’t do it’. If they’re going to be kind enough to wait to say hi, if they’re taking time out of their life to meet me then I’m more than happy to sit there for as long as everyone can wait. I just did another six hour one in Sydney the other week.”

HYDRATION NATION

Long before The Voice, Team Delta had a very different meaning …

“When the in-stores were going for 12 or 13 hours I remember we’d have juice runs and coffee runs. You’d sing a song, people get on stage, it’s a lot of fun actually. Being a very tactile person I love hearing people’s stories. You get a glimpse of their energies, you get this window into people’s lives and I truly believe eyes are the window to the soul. But you have to be quick because you don’t want to hold the line up. I’ve got a bit of a rhythm down pat now.”

Delta Goodrem is literally hands-on with her fans.

“I’ve never been one of those artists who has a personal space barrier. I believe we’re all the same. We’re all human beings. I’m probably more space invading than people are to me. I like to break down that wall straight away when we meet, I’ll hug them first and say ‘Hi, let’s talk’ to get that connection. I never know what my music has meant to someone in their life. But I know how important music has been to me, the songs that have helped me through something. Sometimes you can be in your own bubble as an artist. But every single day someone comes up to me and shares their stories with me. And I want to hear them. The instore is a good meeting place, it just happens to be in a shopping centre. I want to have a hug and an embrace and feel that connection with the people buying my songs.”

FREE EXERCISE

Forget working her wrist and vocal chords, the in-store is a full body workout and efficient time management.

“It’s good for my muscles. It’s a good work out. I’m up and down off the chair, hugging people, sitting down, standing up. I’m tall so often I have to bend forward if it’s a small kid. It’s my gym. I do it all in one.”

“People know I like a lot of sweet things, I tend to walk away with truck loads of chocolate. I love the personal letters they give me too, I read a lot of the letters, that’s another way to get to know everybody.”

Unless there’s a time or safety issue, Goodrem tries to stay to the bitter end.

“I can’t leave if there’s someone who has waited and is still there. It’s in my DNA, in my blood. I’m not someone who would disrespect someone who has respected me by listening to my music. It’d kill me to drive off and leave people waiting who wanted to meet me.”

“I have a very loyal group of fans who come to absolutely every thing I do and I don’t take that for granted. I have watched them all grow up. Some were 12 when I first met them, they’re now 25. They tell me about their jobs, their families, their kids. From having that personal touch at instores I’ve been able to know things about their lives. You do remember the stories, even though there’s thousands of people, you do remember the different people. And now with Twitter it’s so much easier to stay connected and see what is going on in their lives.”

Some fans have got her under their skin, forever, regularly unveiled to her at instores.

“I’ve seen a lot of Delta tattoos, on this last instore I saw more than ever. There’s a lot of people with ‘Believe Again’, a lot of my lyrics and different symbols related to my career. It’s an absolute honour to see people connect in that way and literally get it under their skin. People who don’t get it say ‘Do you find that strange?’ and I say ‘Are you kidding me? It’s such an honour’. What a beautiful, deep connection. That moment stays with me more than they even realise. Although I do have the worst handwriting, especially after hours of signing and someone wants to get my signature tattooed over. I have to really concentrate!”

Laura got the lyrics to Delta’s One Day tattooed on her arm. “She helped me through a tough time in my life when I didn’t think anything was going to be okay again,” Laura explains. “The tattoo reminds me that everything will be okay. About three months later I had the chance to show Delta in person. I was so nervous to show her because I wanted so badly for her to like it. As soon as I showed her, her face lit up and she gave me the biggest tightest hug ever. She kept saying ‘Thank you’ over and over again and she said it was amazing. Delta is the nicest, most genuine, down to earth, humble and beautiful person I have ever met. I’m so thankful for her.”

Troy got Delta’s signature tattooed over as well as a striking portrait of the singer on his leg. “I have a lot more to go, I am going to add all my favourite songs she has done around her,” he says of future work on his leg. “Wish You Were Here was the reason I got the Delta tattoo because that song hit my heart because I lost my nan at an early age,” Troy says. “Delta is a beautiful soul, everything she does is just amazing! The love I have for her and her music is so hard to explain.”

Bohdi from Sydney got ‘Believe Again’ tattooed on his wrist. “A few years ago I was in a dark place,” he says. “I was harming myself and didn’t see the point of living anymore. One night Believe Again came on and it really made me stop and think `No, this needs to stop. This isn’t a way to live’.” Delta knows the reason behind the tattoo. Over the past few years whenever I’ve felt down I look at my wrist and feel hopeful again.” Bohdi is now proudly 1243 days self-harm free, studying, working and happy. “I’m living my life again, instead of just existing.” He showed Goodrem the tattoo (which she’d commented on through Twitter) in the flesh two weeks ago. “I’ve met her six times over eight years. She has always been authentic.

I went to her recent instore six hours early. Her instores are the only way I feel I connect with her. She remembers me every time. She puts in effort to connect and talk. It’s not a fan/celeb basis. But a friendship. Like one big family. Cliche, yet true. I told her once after an event that she helped save my life. She told me, “and you save my life too.”

Artin has run official fan site Delta Daily for seven years, digitally documenting Goodrem’s movements from all over Australia and the world. He says in-stores have been crucial for her career, beyond marketing and sales. “They really help to strengthen and build the fans connection with Delta and each other. I know a lot of people that see her in person at instores and see how genuinely caring she is and truly become fans afterwards. When you interact with her you see the talent and just want to help her succeed.” His site has rallied fans to help Goodrem score a No. 1 with Wings. “Delta instores are a great way for fans to come together and make new friends. This definitely helps with friends and fans uniting to help promote Delta and her active campaigns. Fans definitely want to give back to Delta as much as they can as she’s helped them so much already. We all want to see her song Wings succeed and become No.1. She definitely deserves it!”

SEARCH PARTY

Goodrem harks back to a time when musicians were enjoyed for their music. She’s had no Twitter beefs a la Iggy Azalea and focuses on her immense online love rather than her anonymous haters. The media seized on her ‘feud’ with Voice judge Jessie J, but Goodrem put it down to TV editing and the fact they’re two passionate women. Other Australian singers may get more Google searches, but Goodrem has shown you can sustain a career without resorting to controversy.

WINGS OVER AUSTRALIA

A pop-up instore in Richmond this week while Goodrem is in Melbourne for Cats rehearsals gave her latest single Wings a few more sales and her fans a few more signatures and selfies. The track debuted at No. 8 two weeks ago, then fell down the chart but flew back to No. 1 on iTunes after a performance on The Voice and heavy radio play kicked in. Goodrem will find out on Friday night whether she has her ninth ARIA No. 1 single and first since In This Life in 2007.

“I keep checking iTunes with one eye open to check it’s still No. 1,” she admits. “It’s exciting.”

She’s now finishing her fifth album, writing more songs with Sydney team DNA who she wrote Wings with. “I started sending the DNA guys voice messages last night of new songs — ‘Right guys, here’s a new idea, let’s get it going!’ Wings is charting in the UK now on its own steam, so I think I’ll go back over there after The Voice to promote it. There’ll be another single, hopefully the album and Cats. It’s all systems go.”

MARATHON IN-STORES OVER THE YEARS

Two in one day — 2003, started 11am at Cambelltown, then 4.30-9.45pm at Castle Towers, signing copies of Innocent Eyes.

Five hours at Warringah Mall in 2005 for Mistaken Identity.

Seven hours at Bankstown in 2005 for Almost Here.

Five hours at Westpoint Blacktown in 2007 for Believe Again. Fans queued from 3am with so many there it was moved outdoors in 37 degree heat. Over the course of the five hour signing the weather changed and it started hailing. Goodrem finished signing wet CD slicks for wet fans inside. Over 1600 copies of Believe Again were sold, and signed, that day.

That’s the question being asked as the Sydney band’s new single She’s Kinda Hot slumps from a No. 6 debut last week to an alarming No. 40 this week.

She’s Kinda Hot, the first taste of their second album, hit No. 1 on iTunes immediately after its release on July 17. It was downloaded 11,262 times in Australia in its first week on sale, not quite enough to crack the ARIA Top 5 last week.

However after the first week rush by fans She’s Kinda Hot crashed to No. 40 this week on just 3677 second week sales.

By comparison dance act Lost Frequencies have stayed put on top of the ARIA chart with 18,433 copies of their song Are You With Me sold.

She’s Kinda Hot’s brash, guitar-heavy pop/rock sound is at odds with the dance and R&B filling the singles chart and radio station playlists this year.

5SOS’s Calum Hood told News Corp this month “Hopefully we introduce a bit more guitar on the radio and inspire some people to pick up guitars. We love rock music and we want to hear it back on mainstream radio. I am sick and tired of hearing all this bulls— on the radio, if I am going to be honest. It is driving me insane.”

Pop acts with a diehard fan base often suffer a decrease in sales in their second week as fans rush out to buy it in week one.

The situation was replicated in the UK where She’s Kinda Hot debuted at No. 18 last week and sank to No. 52 on this week’s chart.

The song entered the US chart at No. 22 last week and is still Top 30 on their iTunes chart today.

Just last year the band’s She Looks So Perfect hit No. 1 and sold triple platinum, achieving over 200,000 sales.

The Australian band will be hoping tomorrow’s release of an official video for She’s Kinda Hot will give the song a boost on the charts.

The She’s Kinda Hot lyric video has been viewed over seven million times since July 17.

The band are also releasing a She’s Kinda Hot EP at the end of August in Australia and the UK, with an alternative version of the song, plus three new songs.

5SOS recently completed a successful arena tour of Australia and are now touring the US.

Their management label mates One Direction spent the weekend at No. 1 on the Australian iTunes chart with their first single as a four piece, Drag Me Down.

However the song has been replaced at No. 1 today by Adam Lambert’s Ghost Town, on the back of a local promotional onslaught. Lambert’s The Original High is also topping the iTunes album chart.

The global pop star said she was desperate to tell the world a secret in a heavily-promoted teaser for an upcoming interview on US breakfast program Good Morning America.

“Beyonce has something amazing she wants you to know,” the dramatic promotional clip promised.

“This is something I have to share with everyone,” she said. Speculation grew of a new album, a concert, or even a new baby on the way.

But what was hyped as a big announcement turned out to be just a publicity stunt to promote her new vegan meal delivery service, The 22-Day Revolution.

The 33-year-old is now facing a major backlash, with fans spamming her Instagram account with emojis of French fries, burgers, drumsticks and doughnuts.

The “Bootylicious” singer, who released her fifth solo album with no warning straight to iTunes in 2013, was also criticised on Twitter.

“Beyonce dropped a whole album and collection of videos like a thief in the night but wants to make an announcement about her diet?” Byrd tweeted.

Other members of the Beyhive — the adopted name of the singer’s loyal fanbase — were similarly unimpressed.

“Beyonce did not wake us up early on a Monday to tell us we need to eat more rabbit food,” V tweeted.

During the TV interview Beyonce insisted her weight loss was thanks to a new meal plan devised by her trainer Marco Borges.

“I’m not naturally the thinnest, I have curves, I’m proud of my curves, and I have struggled from a young age with diets,” she said.

“(But after adopting a plant-based diet), I felt like my skin was really firm. A lot tighter than when I deprived myself of food and got the weight off fast. And the weight stayed off.”
