EMILY Ratajkowski is sick to death of everyone referring to her as “that girl from the Blurred Lines video”.

The actress and model, who stars in We Are Your Friends alongside Zac Efron, says her risque performance in Robin Thicke’s infamous Blurred Lines music video is the furthest thing from her mind these days.

“I wasn’t into the idea at all at first. I think I came off as a bit annoyed in the video,” the 24-year-old told InStyle UK, adding that the memorable clip is now “the bane of my existence.”

“When anyone comes up to me about Blurred Lines, I’m like, ‘are we seriously talking about a video from three years ago?’ ”

Thicke’s controversial music video transformed Ratajkowski from an anonymous model into a recognisable name and led to her career-starting role in David Fincher’s Gone Girl, alongside Ben Affleck.

On her much-discussed nudity, not only in Blurred Lines, but also in Gone Girl, she doesn’t understand what all the fuss is about. “It’s weird to me that the reaction to a woman’s naked body is so controversial in our culture,” she told the magazine.

“My mum taught me to never apologise for my sexuality. My dad never made me feel embarrassed. I also don’t think I’ve ever had an awareness of my own body as being super-sexual. It was always just my body.”

Lab tests on two bands that had been on a festival goer’s wrist since 2013 showed they were home to around 9,000 micrococci and 2,000 staphylococci.

“Although these bacteria are normally found on skin there was a surprisingly high number growing from the wristbands,” Microbiology professor Dr Alison Cottell of the University of Surrey told The Mirror.

“Staphylococci are usually harmless but can cause boils and also infect cuts and grazes. They can also cause acute food poisoning if they are ingested.

Slide by The Goo Good Dolls (1998):

They once performed the hit song on Sesame Street with Elmo, which is surprising given what the track is really about.

“It’s such a heavy song,” said frontman Johnny Rzeznik on VH1 Storytellers.

“If you really sit and listen to the lyrics, the song is actually about these two teenage kids and the girlfriend gets pregnant and they’re trying to decide … whether she should get an abortion or if they should get married.”

Some of the lyrics:

Don’t you love the life you killed?

The priest is on the phone

Your father hit the wall

Your ma disowned you

Heart-Shaped Box by Nirvana (1993):

Apparently Kurt Cobain claimed that he wrote the song after watching documentaries about kids with cancer, a claim that is somewhat backed up by music video director Anton Corbijn.

“Some idea about cancer in society, as well as proper cancer, but I never … It was not really clear to me, to be honest, what Kurt personally had in there,” said Corbijn.

But according to Courtney Love, the song is actually about her vagina … yes, her vagina.

In a couple of tweets she sent to singer Lana Del Ray after she performed the song in 2012, Love wrote:

“You do know the song is about my Vagina right? … On top of which some of the lyrics about my vagina I contributed. So umm next time you sing it, think about my vagina will you?”

Some of the lyrics:

Meat-eating orchids forgive no one just yet

Cut myself on angel’s hair and baby’s breath

Broken hymen of your highness I’m left back

Throw down your umbilical noose so I can climb right back

Fight For Your Right by Beastie Boys (1986):

If you’ve ever danced to For Your Right at a party, guess what … the Beastie Boys are actually taking the piss out of you.

The track, which they wrote in about five minutes, is a parody of other famous party songs.

“The only thing that upsets me is that we might have reinforced certain values of some people in our audience when our own values were actually totally different,” said Mike D in an interview.

“There were tons of guys singing along to [Fight for Your Right] who were oblivious to the fact it was a total goof on them. Irony is oft missed.”

I Don’t Like Mondays by The Boomtown Rats (1979):

Most of us agree that Mondays suck, but this tune isn’t about a general dislike about the start of the work week.

“It was about this event that I saw in America, this girl shooting her schoolmates and her teachers,” said frontman Bob Geldof.

The shooting he’s referring to is when 16-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer opened fire at her San Diego school in 1979, killing two men and injuring eight students.

When asked by a reporter why she did it, Spencer reportedly said, “I don’t like Mondays. This livens up the day.”

Some of the lyrics:

And daddy doesn’t understand it,

He always said she was as good as gold.

And he can see no reasons

‘Cause there are no reasons

What reason do you need to be shown?

Brick by Ben Folds Five (1997):

It came 12th in Triple J’s Hottest 100 in 1998, but we wonder how many people who voted for it knew it was actually about abortion?

“The song is about when I was in high school, me and my girlfriend had to get an abortion, and it was a very sad thing,” revealed Ben Folds.

“And, I didn’t really want to write this song from any kind of political standpoint, or make a statement. I just wanted to reflect what it feels like. So, anyone who’s gone through that before, then you’ll know what the song’s about.”

Some of the lyrics:

They call her name at 7:30

I pace around the parking lot

Then I walk down to buy her flowers

And sell some gifts that I got

Pumped Up Kicks by Foster the People (2010):

It was the number one song in Australia in 2011, but this catchy tune is actually about the growing number of school shootings in the US.

“I kind of wrote the song to bring awareness to the issue,” said Mark Foster.

“That sort of thing keeps happening more and more in our country; it’s kind of turning into an epidemic.

“To me the epidemic isn’t gun violence; the epidemic is lack of family, lack of love, and isolation — kids who don’t have anywhere to go or anyone to talk to and that’s what makes them snap.”

Some of the lyrics:

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks

You better run, better run, outrun my gun

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks

You better run, better run, faster than my bullet

Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler (1983):

Westlife did a version, the Glee cast sang it and who can forget The Dan Band’s expletive-ridden performance of the song in Old School.

But guess what … it’s actually about vampires.

“I actually wrote that to be a vampire love song,” said songwriter Jim Steinman.

“Its original title was Vampires in Love … If anyone listens to the lyrics, they’re really like vampire lines. It’s all about the darkness, the power of darkness and love’s place in dark.”

Some of the lyrics:

Every now and then

I get a little bit nervous

That the best of all the years have gone by

Frontman Dave Le’aupepe was only 19 when his partner was diagnosed with melanoma, which then spread to her lymph nodes before attacking her lungs.

For the next few years, the pair went through hell together as they struggled to maintain their relationship, sanity and more importantly health, through endless hospital visits, the expense of treatment and long distances when he relocated to America.

His partner survived, their relationship didn’t and The Positions chronicles their battles against a bold rock soundtrack which recalls stadium kings from Bruce Springsteen to Bono.

“It affects one in two people, 50 per cent of the population. And no one wants to talk about it because it’s awkward,” the 23-year-old songwriter says.

“We wanted all the sides of living with cancer represented on the album; the defiance and hopefulness that are intrinsic to fighting the disease and the anger and resignation because you don’t have any choice in it.”

When Le’aupepe wrote songs including Vital Signs, Kansas, Radioface and Knuckles White Dry, it was therapy and he didn’t intend for them to become part of the band’s first album.

His band mates challenged him to think differently. In the end, an overarching desire to say something important with Gang Of Youths made his decision.

It was a tough call and one the frontman has been reticent to discuss before now out of respect for his former partner.

“These songs are vulnerable, too confessional, harrowing and before them, I was writing totally superficial, facile music, things that didn’t mean anything,” he says.

“Now I understand what the truly cathartic elements of music are; you are slitting your wrists and painting with blood. And it’s ugly and it’s clumpy and it’s got your DNA all over it.

“You look at that and it’s a reflection of everything that is inside you. And someone is going to find some poetry in that.”

He is right. Thousands of people have found poetry, and maybe their own dose of therapy, listening to The Positions.

Their top 5 chart debut came as a shock to everyone, including the band. It seemed that while they had generated plenty of buzz both here and overseas in the past two years, there wasn’t a big push behind the debut record.

But it is now on everyone’s radar and their national run of shows to launch The Positions have sold out.

Le’aupepe and his band are defying the doomsayers who claim rock is dead not only with incendiary shows but epic, ambitious, stadium rock songs busting the five and six-minute mark, which are hardly radio fare these days.

“Ambition is intoxicating and the sound of huge music is important to us,” he says.

“Born To Run, Joshua Tree, Daydream Nationare the three records I want to beat in my lifetime. Time-honoured classics with long song structures. I like the trajectory of the long song.”

But he admits his band have an uphill battle to match the fortunes of the stadium rockers as dance and hip hop continue to dominate the mainstream.

It’s time for another rock’n’roll revolution.

“Rock music stopped being seen as rebellious when it became part of the mainstream. Hip hop and dance music are being seen as the rebels. And a lot of that has to do with the drugs,” he says.

“You look at the last rock movement with The Strokes and all those guys; that ushered in skinny jeans. It’s hardly rebellious.

“And there’s no tribalism anymore because hip hop kids will love Bon Iver. As someone who is passionate about heavy music, I don’t want to be called a poser because I like Kendrick Lamar and I don’t have to deal with that anymore.

“But I think rock’n’roll needs to adapt before it can be saved.”

DRUMMER Jon Farriss was up the back at INXS, but he’s moving into the spotlight with an unlikely first impression — a solo song featuring vocals from cricket star Viv Richards called Smokin’ Joe.

Congratulations, you’ve made a record featuring a sports star that doesn’t suck.

I don’t see this as a sports song but I see why people do. It’s not like I was going looking for a cricket guy, it’s just it was Viv and he happens to play cricket. When I met him it was a no-brainer. I was so lucky to be the first person to bring the idea to him. Viv doesn’t need to do anything for anyone. He’s a formidable character on the field but a really deep and conscious person. Beyond his cricket acumen there was something underneath I found fascinating. It was beyond intellectual, it was a spiritual thing as well. The song reflects my sense of humour, it’s a bit cheeky.

He’s basically narrating a soulful jam sounding like Barry White. Has he ever been involved in a song before?

No. He was out of his comfort zone. He loves music. He got into the flow of the rhythm, threw a few ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ in. At one point Viv had left and my wife came in as I was playing back the tape of Viv just going ‘Ooh yeah’. Two or three minutes of `oohs’ and `aahs’ and my wife said ‘What were you doing in there?’ I’ve got an X-rated version if need be!

What was his reaction when he heard the finished product?

I was in LA working and his manager called me and said ‘I’m in Lord’s (cricket ground) with Viv Richards, I’ve just played him the track and his eyes lit up’. If it hadn’t have worked I wouldn’t have released it. He’s a very charismatic man. When you’re in his presence you know it. I enjoyed a very interesting insight into a guy I normally wouldn’t have had any contact with.

A song with Viv Richards is a left-field choice as your first post-INXS release..

I didn’t expect this to be the first thing out of the date. Once INXS announced we were off the touring circuit I was at the crossroads wondering what I was going to do. All my life I’ve had production ideas and songwriting aspirations, but a lot of that never came through INXS. The last two years I’ve built quite a large catalogue, a lot of it is production based. I spent some time in Nashville, I’ve got a writing partner in LA and I’ve got a studio in Sydney. I’m always working on new material.

A few weeks ago you and your brother Tim were on the field as Port Adelaide fans sang INXS’ Never Tear Us Apart …

We didn’t know the game had started until a few days later. And we were these two stragglers on the ground waving scarfs! That was awkward. But there was a meaning behind it, that song connects with people — 15,000 were singing that song with gusto. A bit of disruption is good now and then. That’s what I grew up on. Everything’s getting so regimented these days. It was a lot more loose and wild when I was growing up.

So you’re in front of 15,000 people who are singing an INXS song back at you. Do you miss playing live?

I do miss it. But I’m very comfortable with how life flows. I have no issues with getting older. I don’t get hung up thinking ‘It’s all over now’. Life is about embracing change. To me it looks better and better from a distance because it was great but there’s still great things to come.

So INXS as a touring act is still in the past tense?

I don’t see it happening. We’re not one of those bands who ever did a farewell tour. We never expected to announce it. I basically blurted it out onstage in Perth. There was no fanfare. It wasn’t set up to be a big moment. We were in Perth, I saw a full circle. We started there. It seemed like a fitting place to announce it’s unlikely we’ll be playing more gigs. But life is good.

Surely since the INXS mini-series there’s been offers to tour in some form?

I’m sure there has. The band members don’t get those offers so I don’t know what they are. And it’s not like we check in to see if there’s offers. But I’m sure there are.

At one point your manager was thinking out loud about a tour using a hologram of Michael Hutchence…

That’s an inevitable phase of technology. We know that technology exists, I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before people use it. But it’s nothing we’re thinking about.

What was it like watching yourself being portrayed in the mini-series?
Everyone was really concerned about Michael and other elements, like my parents. I wasn’t really thinking about me. It is obviously a mixture of flattery and fear that you’re watching someone portraying you. It’s bigger than that. I’m a small part of a big picture. And the big picture is what they had to get right. It’s almost impossible to get that right. Everyone sees their reality in a different way. They got the essence of the story, that was the most important part. Tim (Farriss) tried to get the feeling and the emotion behind what was happening. We were having fun. Even if it was challenging, we’d make it enjoyable. There were lots of jokes. Tim would have to say ‘Guys, lighten up’. I think they did a really good job.

What about the ending with Michael’s death and the drama around his last few years?

I was nervous. There’s lots of stuff I don’t want to relive. Been there done that. Like anyone’s life. But I was grateful I got an early copy, I could sit by myself and watch it, not watch my life played out with a room full of people. I was expecting to be a sobbing mess and I wasn’t. The ending came round to life goes on, let’s focus on the part we’re celebrating. It’s easy and predictable to focus on the negative elements, they’re only small but they tend to overshadow everything because people have a hard time processing them.

Did you see Kylie Minogue covering Need You Tonight?

I saw it on You Tube, it was really great. I’ve seen Cee-Lo do it, I’ve seen Tom Jones do it. We were on tour in Vegas once, we were told Tom Jones played Need You Tonight the night before. So we did It’s Not Unusual and Michael just nailed it. For Kylie to do wipes any stigma that might be attached to the Michael/Kylie thing. Good on her.

She mentioned she could feel his presence when she sang it …

I think there was a healing element. It’s OK to tip your hat to it and embrace it. It’s definitely eased a lot of stuff for everybody. People are finally chilling out about Kylie and Michael.

What were they like as a couple?

Great fun. Michael and I were living in Hong Kong, it was a great time of our lives. It was around 1989. We spent a bit of time with Kylie’s folks in Hong Kong, I remember going on a junk with them. She was burgeoning, she was coming out of the Neighbours thing. I remember thinking she had a big future. There was some reciprocity that just worked.

Your brother Tim had an accident with his hand earlier this year, how is he?

He’s fine. It’s been a big challenge but he’s risen to that challenge. I have so much respect for him. He’s taken the right stance. He’s on the mend. It’s going to be a slow road.

There was a lot of focus on whether he could still play guitar …

When something like this happens it’s not about the guitar it’s about Tim and his heart and his mind. We’ll cross that road when we need to.

What’s left in the INXS vaults?
Not sure. It’s a big vault. It really is. It’s a huge, enormous job. We’ve had to digitise a lot of it because it’s on tape. It’s scary, anything over 20 years old starts to decay, you have to bake and cook the tape, it’s counterintuitive putting tapes in an oven. Andrew (Farriss) has been doing that.

What’s next from Jon Farriss?

There’s a few different projects. I’m writing songs I want to filter out to different artists, they have a pop element then there’s the soul/funk area which is my comfort zone. All the roots of my upbringing from James Brown to disco to Motown. That was a big sound of INXS, marrying a rhythm box sounding approach to the way I drummed to rhythm boxes, inspired by Kraftwerk, Roxy Music, that era. I’ve always been comfortable in front of a computer, so it’s a perfect segway into the next chapter of my life, which is soul music, tasteful player, good players and computer editing.

That disco/funk sound is back in vogue thanks to Nile Rodgers, who you worked with on INXS’ Original Sin.

I know! I had all these boogie and disco songs ready to go and in LA I heard Daft Punk’s Get Lucky and it floored me. Not only was it the kind of thing I was doing but Nile was on it! Nile would have been the first person I called. I’ve seen him a few times over the last few years. There’s more boogie and funk stuff coming out now. Nile is feeling the love right now. He’s getting such recognition and validation.

He’s got an amazing book, have you thought about writing yours?

It’s come up recently. It’s definitely an obvious next step. It’d have to be more about my view on life and the spiritual element. What it was like for me to be young, to bypass my teenage years and get thrust straight into the music world. I remember being 17 in Melbourne and starving and staying at cockroach infested places, sleeping virtually in squalor. They were exciting times, we had the big vision. It’s just a matter of remembering it all, we didn’t have mobile phones, we didn’t keep memoirs. I’d lug these big video cameras around but I was never in the footage because I was behind the camera. We just lived it. There’s not a lot of documented stuff to draw from. It’s a blur because there was so much happening, but you have to dig deep and you remember extraordinary things.

People like sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll in their music memoirs, would it have that tone?

Well there was sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. That’s the basic story. As a kid, that’s what you grow up aspiring to. I remember watching the Countdown Awards as a kid and (Dragon’s) Marc Hunter would accept an award swilling from a bottle of champagne. They were the people you looked up to. Keith Richards had that whole almost about to fall over but plays brilliantly thing. It’s meant to be disruptive, that’s why we all got into rock ‘n’ roll. But then comes the sharp reality once you’re immersed in it but it doesn’t pay to be off your head all the time because you’re not going to be as good as you think you are. There were times it got the better of me but we always aspired to be really good and play well.

Smokin’ Joe, Jon Farriss and Viv Richards, is out now on iTunes

Participating in a filmed question and answer session for Romeo Saturday Night Online, the Ghost Town singer made repeated references to the incident.

Asked whether Drake was a good kisser — she described it as a “million dollar question” — she said: “I kissed a girl and I liked it.”

Later in the chat, when asked what advice she would give to her younger self, she said: “Don’t kiss Drake, no matter how many times he begs you.”

The 18-minute clip makes for entertaining viewing, if only to see Madonna eagerly sipping her way through two glasses of wine, and suffering a succession of paper cuts as she throws away the sheets containing her fans’ questions.

“I just got a paper cut on my eye,” she complains at one point, later adding: “The edges of these papers are really sharp.”

Although many of the questions revolved around her new album Rebel Heart and her upcoming tour, Madonna also revealed some interesting titbits about other periods during her career.

“I miss the old school way of making music,” she replied in answer to a fan’s question. “I miss bringing my cassette tape to a DJ in a nightclub, flirting with him, convincing him that I’m the shit and getting him to play my music in a nightclub.”

She also revealed that some of the earliest music videos she made remained her favourites.

“Material Girl was so much fun to make … Like A Virgin, Open Your Heart with [director Jean-Baptiste] Mondino,” she said. “Justify My Love was fun. I got to kiss a lot of guys. And girls. It was fun.”

The pop queen revealed that she would be keen to work with Britney Spears again (“I’m a big fan”), but the person she most wanted to collaborate with was US President Barack Obama.

She also hinted that her Malawian-born son David Banda might one day follow her into the recording business, stating that she would be interested in producing for him, “’cause if doesn’t behave well I can ground him”.

Asked about the secret of her career longevity, she replied “rosé” — while taking another swig — and when asked about the biggest misconception people had about her, she simply replied: “People think I’m short, but I’m not”.
